CEO of GM outlines plan for “New GM” after auto company declared bankruptcy

Thursday, June 4, 2009

In a New York press conference at 16:15 UTC, June 1st, Fritz Henderson, the Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, which filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors earlier today, outlined a plan for what he called a “New GM”.

Speaking to the press under safe harbor provisions of U.S. law, Henderson described the events of today as a “defining moment” in the history of General Motors. Speaking to the public he said that “The GM that let you down is history,” and described a “New GM” that he expected to result from the bankruptcy process.

Henderson stated that he envisioned the bankruptcy process would take between 60 and 90 days. He stressed several times his view that the process would be one that is executed quickly, saying that not just a sense of urgency but “pure unadulterated speed” was his expectation of the process. He emphasized that “GM remains open for business” during the bankruptcy period, continuing to sell and to support its products, and that day one motions had been filed in the bankruptcy court in order to allow this.

Regarding the bankruptcy process he said, “We will do it right. And we will do it once.”

He stated that the plan for General Motors had the support of the United Auto Workers union, the Canadian Auto Workers union, the GM VEBA, and a majority of the unsecured bondholders of GM. He also mentioned that GM had already received €1.5 million in bridge financing from the German government.

In response to questions about the possibility of the United States federal government, a majority shareholder in the restructured company, dictating future product development and strategy, such as the sale of more fuel-efficient and green vehicles; he first observed that the federal government had already stated to him that it had “no real interest in running our business” and that he expected that still to be his job. Of the specific hypothetical scenario where the management of GM wants to make one type of car, because it thinks that it is the right thing for the business, and the U.S. government wants to make another type of car, he stated that “I don’t think it’s going to happen.” Expanding on that point he stated that he expected the “New GM” to focus upon “highly fuel-efficient and green technology”, and that operating both in accordance with U.S. environmental laws and in response to customer demand would naturally result in the New GM producing the types of vehicles that the U.S. government would encourage.

The “New GM” he also expected to focus on “four core brands”, and will size its dealership to match that. He stated that GM would offer a “deferred termination” package to dealers, to allow them to cease dealing in GM vehicles in a managed and gradual way.

He stated that the bankruptcy filings did not cover General Motors’ businesses in Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, and Asia and the Pacific. Of GM’s profitable ventures in China, specifically, he stated that they were “a critical part of the New GM”. In response to questions of whether the New GM would import cars from China to the U.S., he stated the formative company’s core principle that “We build where we sell” applied in both directions, with GM building in China to sell in China and building in the U.S. to sell in the U.S., stating that this shortened supply chains.

He declined to predict when the New GM would return to profitability, stating that the goal was rather to lower the break-even EBIT point for the company. He also declined to speculate upon when the U.S. government would sell its stake in the company, saying that that was a question “better addressed to the U.S. Treasury”, and merely saying that he expected it to be “years, not months” when the U.S. Treasury felt it would give “the right return for taxpayers.”

Why Experts Have Acne Scar Removal Wrong

by

Clarita Milles

If you go and see any doctor, dermatologist, or skin specialist in the hope of removing acne scars you will often be presented with an array of chemical treatments aimed at burning the skin. However, if you speak to someone with a background in natural treatments they will direct you towards a completely contrasting solution. These natural solutions are repeatedly shown to be as effective, if not more so, and carry none of the risks associated with chemical treatments.

For this reason the following seeks to demonstrate and identify the means in which skin specialists achieve the results of removing acne scarring through chemical peels in comparison to natural topical solutions. The best solution is as clear as day.

THE PROCESSES INVOLVED

Chemical peels work as acid is painted onto the skin, which in turn burns the top layer of skin. This burnt layer then eventually peels off the face after a week which allows for the growth of new skin to come to the surface. The theory is that the thickened pigmented epidermis showing cellular disarray (acne scars) is replaced by fresh, orderly, uniform cells. A new band of dermis then forms between the epidermis and the underlying tissue, which enhances the elasticity of the skin.

Natural topical solutions such as natural microdermabrasion creams softly remove the top layer of undesired scar tissue through the use of micro-crystals. This process skims away the top layer of effected skin just like chemical peels, however it is a much more subtle process. The regeneration of new skin cells are then speed-up by natural compounds such as Helix Aspersa Muller GlycoConjugates, which replace scar collagen with a mixture of skin cells and invisible collagen fibers, bringing elasticity and vitality back to the skin.

THE DURATION OF TREATMENT

Chemical Peel treatments are a long and extensive process. Initially the skin must be pre-treated with the application of prescribed creams that both soften and anesthetize the skin. The individual must then undergo a series of acid burning sessions. Finally, the skin must go through a healing process that includes the application of further prescribed creams to provide both recovery and ongoing maintenance to the recently affected area.

The application of natural cream solutions are not as complex. The routine is as simple as applying the creams in the comfort of one’s bathroom after a shower.

THE RISKS ASSOCIATED

All forms of chemical treatment carry a degree of risks, chemical peels are no different. These side effects can vary depending on the patient and generally, the deeper the chemical peel, higher the likelihood of complications arising. These include, but are not limited to:

– The flaring of acne or cold sores – An inflammation of the tissue around the mouth (peri-oral dermatitis) – Peeled skin may also inflame resulting in unsightly scarring – Increased pigmentation such as transient spots of hyper or hypopigmentation – Complete avoidance of direct UV rays – Lengthy recovery and maintenance procedures – All of which may last for months

As one might assume acne treatment cream carries no such danger. As the ingredients comprise of only natural substances they work harmoniously with the body’s skin cells and present no risk of side effects or nasty irritation.

NATURAL ACNE TREATMENT CREAM IS THE ONLY SOLUTION

When determining the best

acne scars treatment

available it is easy to see that natural solutions are easier to apply, safer, and yet produce the same results. In light of this one should look towards a topical solution such as Bioskinexfol for their

treatment for scars

China completes “mammoth” Three Gorges Dam hydro-electricity project

Saturday, May 20, 2006

The People’s Republic of China has announced the completion of an enormous dam across the Yangtze River, an important milestone for the world’s largest hydroelectric project. The official Xinhua News Agency reports the event as a “landmark in the construction of the project.”

Launched in 1993, the Three Gorges Project, including the 2,300 metre long, 185 metre high dam with 26 power generators, is being built in three phases on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River – China’s longest river. Built with over 16 million m3 of concrete, the Three Gorges Dam is considered the biggest reinforced concrete dam in the world.

The Three Gorges Reservoir is capable of holding nearly 40 billion m3 of water, including a space of 22.15 billion m3 for extra flooded water. With a length of more than 6,300 km and a natural fall of 5,400 metres from the west to the east, the flood-prone Yangtze River is the third largest in the world.

The gigantic project is expected to generate around 15 million megawatts of electricity, 84.7 billion kWh annually when the entire project is completed in 2008. But whilst proponents of the world’s largest hydropower project laud the increased electricity generation and improved flood control as benefits to China, opponents claim destruction of the environment, ruin to China’s cultural heritage – disaffecting millions of local residents.

“In my view, building the Three Gorges dam is a ridiculous and evil farce,” says dam opponent Dai Qing. “Many people have known something is wrong with the project, but few have dared to speak up,” she said. After it becomes operational, the 660km reservoir created by the dam will drown 13 towns, 4500 villages and 162 archaeological sites.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) are also strident vocal critics. “The dam is having a titanic social and environment impact,” the group said this week. “Sometimes people are being moved out by truncheon and bulldozer because they refuse to leave their home for fear of not being rehoused. Human rights violations are massive and brutal,” it said. FoE pointed to evidence that the dam was already having a serious environment impact.

FoE points to a scientific study by the East China Normal University in Shanghai, published in March in Geophysical Research, which said that in 2004, the Three Gorges dam has reduced the supply of sediment to the Yangtze delta to just 35 per cent of the norm.

Millions of tonnes of silt are drawn along the Yangtze river every year, and critics argue the dam will intercept much of it – with potentially disastrous consequences. They say the lack of sediment further downstream would lead to soil erosion, and the accumulation of sediment in the reservoir could raise the dam level, submerging even more land.

Opponents say the reservoir could fill with the accumulated garbage from tens of millions of households. The China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corp. has spent $2.5 million on a vessel to collect as much as 7 million cubic feet of garbage that accumulates at the dam each year, according to Xinhua. Some argue that the impact of the dam project will contribute to the extinction of the rare Yangtze river dolphin.

The dam project will force the relocation of a total of 1.13 million people, and communities that have lived in the area for millennia will disappear. Researchers warn sedimentation and rising water levels in the reservoir will lead to the evacuation of tens of thousands more people.

But as the waters rise, that which can not be saved will disappear along with some world famous natural scenery. Critics say the dam is under threat from earthquakes, with two geological fault lines nearby. Officials working on the project counter this by saying the worst that can happen is a tremor measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, while the dam is built to withstand force 7.0.

“Although the dam is now complete, we still have a long way to go and cannot become self-satisfied or relax our efforts in the least,” Li Yongan, general manager of the Three Gorges Project Development Corp, said. The official China Daily in an editorial called for people to remember the more than 100 workers whom died during the dam’s construction. “The best possible way to repay such a debt of gratitude is to make sure the highest safety and quality standards are observed up till the very end of the entire building process,” the editorial said.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

Tips On Selecting A Pet Hospital In Alpharetta

byAlma Abell

When a pet is sick or injured, it is often extremely crucial they receive medical attention as soon as possible. Many times even a minor issue can quickly turn into a major problem for a pet if they do not receive the medical care they need promptly. While most veterinarian clinics and offices can handle seeing such pets if they are open, often a pet will be injured or ill outside of normal business hours. In such cases, it will be necessary to find a Pet Hospital in Alpharetta where they can be seen quickly.

Because prompt care can often be vital to a pet’s life, most pet owners will find it beneficial to locate the closest animal hospital to where they live. By knowing the hours and location of such a hospital, when an emergency arises, the pet owner will be able to handle it quickly and without hesitation.

In addition to finding a nearby location, it can also be a good idea to find a Pet Hospital in Alpharetta the pet’s regular veterinarian is associated with or familiar with. In doing this it can make the care for a pet much easier since the vet and the hospital will be able to communicate with each other about the condition of the animal. This can be essential in issues involving pets with medical conditions or other issues, which require special care. It can also be helpful in the recovery process as well. By choosing an animal hospital who will work with the veterinarian who regularly cares for the pet, information can be passed easily to the vet so care during recovery is handled efficiently.

In addition, to making sure a facility like, Animal Hospital of Nesbit Ferry Crossing is close by and recommended by the pet’s veterinarian, it can also be a good idea for the pet owner to pay a visit to the facility as well. By taking the time to visit the location before an emergency arises, the pet’s owner will be able to see first hand how the staff handles their patients and their owners. They can also see how clean and well maintained the facility is and the atmosphere in the facility. This can be very helpful in helping the pet owner to feel confident when bring their pet to the location for emergency care. Get in touch with us for more info.

Ontario investigators search for the body of Victoria Stafford

Thursday, May 28, 2009

Police forensic investigators in Canada continue the search for the body of eight-year-old Victoria Stafford, whom they now believe was murdered on the same day she was abducted, April 8, 2009 from her Woodstock, Ontario school.

Counselors have been providing support to students at Oliver Stephens Public School.

There have been two arrests made, one for the first-degree murder and abduction of Tori Stafford and the other person has been charged with being an accessory and abduction. The next court appearance is May 28.

Police and neighbours say that the parents of Tori may have been familiar with at least one of the abductors.

The search continues for the body of Tori as well as the rear seat of a vehicle connected with the abduction. The search area is around Guelph, and Fergus north east of Woodstock.

Police are seeking information about a blue 2003 four-door Honda which is believed to be blue with black spray paint on large portions of it. Investigators believe it to have been in the Home Depot parking lot in Guelph on the evening of April 8, the day of the abduction.

The grey cloth covered back seat from the above vehicle is missing and police are seeking to recover it. Police have been combing rural areas and scouring lake bottoms in the hopes of turning up more evidence.

“We continue to receive information on all different parts of the investigation and each piece of lead or tip, if you will, is being investigated as far as it can take us,” said Laurie-Anne Maitland, an Oxford Community Police Constable. “If I were her parent I would want to have that ounce of hope too until I knew 100 per cent. I think it’s the nature [of people to hope for] one possible little miracle … and it’s not [possible].”

Woodstock, the home town of Tori is located in the county of Oxford, and the search has spread out to the neighbouring county of Wellington. The city of Guelph is located about 42 miles (68 km) to the north east, and Fergus which is north of Guelph is about 57 miles (92 km) from Woodstock.

Left Hand Drive Cars And The Direction Of Forward Traffic

Submitted by: Daniel Millions

When it comes to transportation, a country will decide if it is to be either left hand drive cars or right hand drive cars and traffic that will be driven on its roads. For drivers who visit a country that seats its drivers on the opposite side, it can be a surprising change to sit thus on their first driving experience in such a country.

Road rules dictate that traffic will be either left hand or right hand in any country. This means that the forward moving traffic will all be on the left or right side of the road. North American drivers are used to driving on the right hand side of the road. Most of the world’s countries place their forward moving traffic in the right hand side. Approximately 66% of the world’s drivers are on the right hand side. The other 34% drive forward on the left side of the road.

Not only are cars moving forward on one or the other side of the road, the driver will be positioned on the left or right hand side of their vehicle. Cars, which place the driver on the left hand side of the car, are called left hand drive cars. The driver on the right hand side is driving a right hand drive car.

When cars first came out, many times the driver position was in the middle of the seat. This placement did not last long since it did not afford the driver any visual or protective benefits. When the driver is seated on the left hand side of the car, the person can keep incoming traffic in view and stay in a correct position on the road relative to incoming traffic. The driver can judge the distance from incoming cars and at intersections. This birdseye point of view is also helpful when an oversize vehicle is coming towards the car.

Another benefit to having a driver located on the left hand side of the car involves the front seat passenger. A driver will be able to drop off a front seat passenger who is seated on the right side of the car at any street location when necessary. When the passenger is on the left seat, the driver must pull into a laneway to let the passenger leave the vehicle.

Right hand drive cars offer the driver protection in case of a collision with incoming traffic. By protecting the driver this way, it is believed that the driver will have a better survival rate after an accident. Although a right hand drive car does not offer all the visual cues that the left hand car does, the right hand car is still popular with some consumers.

The driver of the car and the country that the person is driving in will ultimately decide the suitability of a left hand drive car for their roads. Left hand drive cars offer many benefits including a clear view of the road and oncoming traffic. For many drivers, the left hand drive cars are a better choice.

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.
