Observing the 2012 Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the US, and wider world

Friday, January 13, 2012

This week US citizens observed National Human Trafficking Awareness Day through acts of education, legislation, and enforcement; whilst, around the world, other people highlighted or tackled this global problem in their own countries.

According to an annual report on human trafficking released by the US State Department in June last year, 27 million men, women and children are exploited through human trafficking. Worldwide, at least two million children are estimated to be trafficked victims of the sex trade; and, in military conflicts, it is not uncommon for children to be forced to bear arms. In releasing the report last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing trafficking, and cultural issues associated with it.

Under the United Nations’ Palermo Protocols, human trafficking encompasses cases where victims are born into slavery, forcibly transported for exploitation, consented to work with a trafficker, and/or were forced to participate in criminal activities. The Protocols also recognize the unique status and rights of children.

Reports from across the United States show a number of communities taking local action to solve, or otherwise highlight, this global problem.

In Southern California, Sister Caritas Foster is an advocate for the area’s victims of human trafficking. Commenting on the area’s involvement, she stated: “We in the San Francisco Bay Area are one of the largest receiving areas with our borders and coasts”. For over four years, Foster has worked on educating the public on human trafficking, speaking to civic and religious groups and describing the power traffickers hold over their victims through vivid accounts of situations trafficked individuals find themselves in. Many have no idea where they are located, suffer under the constant threat of deportation, and most often lack the language abilities to seek help.

Los Angeles politician Don Knabe said human trafficking was not a distant problem but one that hits close to home. As the county supervisor overseeing the fourth district in Los Angeles County, Knabe cited figures from the Probation Department showing 84 percent of arrests of children on prostitution charges in 2010 were in his district; he believes the overall problem for the county is much larger, and wants the Probation Department to establish a special unit dedicated to sexually exploited minors.

Northward in Seattle, Washington, members of the King County Sheriff’s department realized that law enforcement had to deal supportively with the symptoms of human trafficking — rather than putting victims in jail. This gave birth to the “Genesis Project” where sheriff’s deputies offer potential victims of trafficking a comfortable safe haven with amenities for 24 hours, and put them in touch with social services for counselling, job training, and education advice.

Politicians from several states have sought to address the connection between tourism and human trafficking; Indiana’s state Senate unanimously passed a human trafficking bill on Tuesday morning. Current legislation only considered forced marriage and prostitution as human trafficking; loopholes in the existing laws allowed some forms of human trafficking to escape prosecution. Lawmakers in the state hope to toughen their human trafficking laws, and have new legislation on the statute books in time for the Super Bowl, due to be held in Indianapolis on February 5. The just-passed bill now goes to the House for approval.

Also on Tuesday, lawmakers from Hawaii held a special hearing on human trafficking. Kathryn Xian, of Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery, says traffickers capitalize on the state’s tourist-based economy. She introduced a package of seven bills she says will help prevent human trafficking in the state.

At a national level, the US government continues to work abroad on the issue of trafficking; Luis CdeBaca, a special ambassador for human trafficking, is working with Myanmar, commonly known as Burma, as the country seeks to improve diplomatic relations with the United States. Myanmar was identified by the US State Department as having one of the worst records of forced labor, and as a country that lacks necessary laws to curb human trafficking.

Although National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is a US-based effort to recognise, and highlight, this issue — as a topic of global concern being highlighted through the United Nations, others around the world continue efforts to increase public awareness and tackle trafficking.

Forty-six women from the international group Operation Mobilization sought to raise awareness by climbing Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit is called “Uhuru Peak”, with Uhuru meaning “freedom” in Swahili. Each of the non-professional climbers raised US$10,000 to help those affected by human trafficking.

In the Middle East, several countries are reported to have problems with human traffickers recruiting unemployed gay Kenyan men to become sex slaves. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supposedly the more-common destination countries into which Kenyans are lured with offers of high-paying jobs. However, in the United Arab Emirates — where no law prohibits trafficking, but homosexuality is illegal — the problem is compounded.

Enforcement of existing laws, and acting against trafficking, are seen as key steps in reducing the activity. Showing that no country is unaffected, Northern Ireland police are currently investigating five sex trafficking cases; and, on Monday, Filipino police rescued fifteen women following a tip-off regarding women recruited, and being held, prior to being sent to work abroad.

In the Northern Ireland situation, Detective Superintendent Philip Marshall stated that fifteen men are to be contacted, suspected of having paid for sex with trafficked women. Identifying victims within the UK, or victims seeking help, is becoming more challenging with the sex industry having switched to using hotel rooms as-opposed to street corners. Many victims of trafficking are found to be unaware of where within the country they are.

In the Philippines situation, Zamboanga City police are still seeking the recruiter of the fifteen women rescued in Rio Hondo.

A range of complexities are involved in the sentencing of both those convicted of human trafficking, and their victims. In one Canadian case, 43-year-old Hungarian Lajos Domotor pled guilty to trafficking men and women into forced labor. Following being charged with conspiracy to commit human trafficking, he developed terminal stomach cancer and has been given a 10 to 15 percent chance of living five years.

In the UK, officials are seeking to detect exploitation prior to sentencing — as a counter to the high number of foreign women in jails, frequently having been victims of trafficking. One in seven women prisoners across England and Wales are foreign, with the primary offenses being drug or immigration-related. A report into the issue recommends sentencing decisions should consider the role of women, and of coercion, in such cases.

Artists also have a special role to play in the education and awareness of the public. The first opera about sex trafficking will premiere in Liverpool, England, on March 7. Anya17 was composed by Adam Gorb with a libretto written by Ben Kaye. Performers will come from Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic contemporary music ensemble 10/10. Funding for the production was provided in part by the United Nations.

Early morning fire kills four New York group home residents

Sunday, March 22, 2009

After an early morning fire began, four out of the nine people living at the Riverview Individual Residential Alternative group home located in Wells, New York were killed by the blaze. The Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which supervises the home, told the media that the fire started at approximately 5:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time. Two staff members were at the home at the time, who safely evacuated four of the five survivors.

The names of the residents killed in the fire were not able to be released due to New York’s Mental Hygiene Law, but are able to be identified as two adult men, aged 32 and 52, and two adult women, aged 43 and 60. A 71-year-old male was injured in the fire, and was taken to a hospital in Utica, a nearby city. The other four residents have been relocated to an unnamed group home. Both staff members are also being examined at the hospital.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones and friends of the four victims and to continue to pray for the full recovery of those five people and two staff members who survived this incident. I also want to express my thanks and appreciation for the first responders and volunteers who worked swiftly and diligently to respond to this tragedy,” David Patterson, the governor of New York, said to the media.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined. However, the New York Civil Liberties Union stated that “the blaze appears to have been an electrical fire and the sprinkler system was knocked out immediately.” They also called for “an immediate investigation into the causes of and contributing factors of the fire.”

The New York State Department of State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is currently investigating the causes of the blaze, with help from New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

More than 75 dead as Typhoon Rai sweeps through Philippines

Sunday, December 19, 2021

On December 16, Typhoon Rai, locally known as Typhoon Odette created havoc in the Philippines. More than 300 thousand people were evacuated from the southeastern islands of Philippines. After making landfall, the storm ripped off roofs and toppled concrete power poles while knocking out communications and electricity. Today, the Government of Philippines said that more than 75 people have died.

The island of Siargao, where the typhoon made landfall was “totally devastated”, the governor said. The typhoon was categorized as a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon. Surigao City was deprived of electricity and communications due to downed power lines while scores of trees left many roads impassable. Many buildings in the area were also devastated and the overall impact of Rai in the area was described as “widespread”.

On December 17, Gwendolyn Garcia, the governor of Cebu, placed the province of Cebu in a state of calamity due to widespread damages. That same day, the governor of Bohol, Arthur C. Yap, also put the province of Bohol in a state of calamity. The storage of Covid-19 vaccines and vaccine kits were also feared to be disrupted due to power outages. President Duterte also announced that he will tour Leyte, Surigao City, Bohol and Cebu to check the situation there. Food and water were sparse for those impacted by the storm.

Rai wreaked havoc across Vietnamese-held isles in the Spratly Islands. Observation tower in Southwest Cay recorded sustaining winds up to 180 km/h (112 mph) and gusts of 200 km/h (124 mph) during the afternoon of December 18, before being knocked down. No casualties were reported in Vietnam.

In the United States, each state imposes a law that requires vehicle owners to have auto insurance policies. Auto insurance is aimed to assist and cover the policyholder in cases where there are bodily injuries, property damages, and liabilities. The coverage of auto insurance policies, however, differs from one kind to another. Both drivers and car owners can benefits from auto insurance policies. Essentially, costs of damage and repair are cut down when one is covered by an auto insurance policy.

The extent of coverage, as earlier stated, depends on the actual auto insurance policy availed by the policyholder. The coverage of auto insurance plans depend on the actual insurance plan availed by the policyholder. Normally, the higher the price of an insurance plan, the wider the coverage it offers.

One of the most common features or coverage offered by insurance providers is the one that concerns the repair costs of the policyholder s vehicle. For instance, if the windshields were broken because of a very strong wind, the insurance company may cover the expenses of repairing it since it is not the fault of the driver.

Another is called the no fault coverage. There are cases when accidents happen between an insured driver and an uninsured driver. Sometimes, the other driver may not have a driver s license. When covered by the said coverage or feature, the insured driver still needs to file a claim to repair the damages that have incurred during the accident. The insured driver, however, should be able to justify his claim.

Under some types of auto insurance plans, legal fees may also be covered. Normally, partial legal fees are shouldered by the insurance company. This may involve bail or other fines related with trials, legal infractions, or tickets. For example, a police gives you a ticket for violating a traffic law, the fines could be partially paid through your insurance plan.

In shopping for choices on auto insurance policies, you should first exhaust your possible options so you can come up with an intelligent decision. The first step of determining the type of auto insurance you need is determining the extent of coverage you need. You should also check out auto insurance quotes offer by auto insurance providers.

A Fence Company In St Paul Helps Property Owners Keep Animals Out Of Gardens

byadmin

A Fence Company in St Paul can help property owners who need to secure their vegetable gardens against intruders. Those intruders aren’t of the human variety, but rather critters like squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, and even deer. The neighbor’s dog might even have an ongoing craving for tomatoes. All these animals can be tenacious vegetable hounds, and only a fence will keep them out.

Even though St. Paul and the surrounding municipalities are urban, a wide variety of wildlife roams through the area and takes up residence there. The many lakes are appealing to these animals, and they can easily travel through green spaces and larger lots. Deer and other wild animals thrive in the kind of sprawling land and waterways that characterize the Twin Cities. Considering that many area residents even feed these critters intentionally, the problem has become remarkable.

People generally like to have gardens fenced with metal since that material holds up well against wildlife and pets and doesn’t create a visibly blocked-off portion of the property. A chain-link fence installed by a Fence Company in St Paul is a possibility, or a more decorative structure can be built. Chain-link fencing doesn’t have to look stark and cold, however. It’s available with coatings in various colors, and gardeners have the option of adding vines or shrubbery to brighten it up. Any garden-protecting fence in this region must be sturdy enough so deer or dogs won’t be able to knock it over. Deer, in particular, may be inclined to try this if they are hungry and having any trouble finding food. Fortunately for gardeners, that doesn’t tend to happen during the gardening season.

Fences, as installed by a contractor such as Dakota Unlimited, can even have a roof of the same material. Obviously, it’s essential not to block the sunshine, so a metal grid pattern is beneficial. This blocks animals that can jump from trees or easily climb a chain-link structure. It also keeps birds out. At the other end of the fence, the material can be installed far enough underground to prevent critters from tunneling underneath. Raccoons, possums, and chipmunks may be motivated to try this. Mixed reactions to G8 summit

Sunday, July 10, 2005

On Friday, the annual meeting of the leaders of the world’s eight most powerful countries, the Group of Eight (G8), ended ahead of schedule with few resolutions to the disappointment of many. The G8 meeting ended early Friday to accommodate Tony Blair, who requested to return to London in response to Thursday’s bombings in London. At the conclusion of the meeting, the leaders pledged to increase humanitarian aid to Africa by $50 billion, however $30 billion had already been pledged previously.

The group was unable to make significant progress regarding global warming, but made several key decisions relating to combating poverty in Africa. The eight leaders pledged to double the previously proposed aid of $25 billion to $50 billion a year by 2010. The group also confirmed an earlier announcement that they would cancel the debt of 18 countries, mostly in Africa, selected from among the 38 heavily indebted poor countries (HIPCs).

Additionally, $2 billion was earmarked for aid to the Palestine Nation. In addition to the increase in aid for Africa, the group announced universal access to AIDS treatment, committed to a peacekeeping force in Africa, and heard African leaders’ promises to move toward democracies that follow the rule of law.

Adriano Campolina Soares, head of ActionAid’s Americas office, stated her disappointment with the resolutions. “The G8 have completely failed to deliver trade justice. President George W. Bush and the European Union have played a cynical game of bluff. The US has no intention of giving up or lowering the massive subsidies it gives its cotton farmers, that are forcing 10 million farmers in West Africa out of business. Poor countries should take this as a warning that they will have a hard fight in the upcoming trade talks at the World Trade Organization.”

Jennifer Morgan, climate-change director for the World Wildlife Fund expressed frustration with the United States’ effort. “There’s been no movement from the Bush administration, even the very noble efforts of Prime Minister Blair to get President Bush to change his position have failed.”

U2 singer Bono sees it in a different perspective. “It’s worth stopping for a second and looking back down the valley of where we’ve come from, we jumped up and down when Live 8 raised $200 million, and now, to stop for a second, we are talking about $25 billion in new money.”

Live 8 organizer Bob Geldof described the summit as a “qualified triumph.”

Gordon Brown, British Chancellor of the Exchequer: “It makes you angry because there’s nothing in science or technology or medicine that should prevent us from tackling poverty. It’s a lack of political will and if Gleneagles is about anything it’s bringing together all the countries of the world – rich and poor – agreeing that we’ve got to take the action that’s necessary. That’s why I hope by the time Gleneagles is finished we can say that the timetable for action and poverty is one that will lead to great improvements by 2015.”

First Active offer 100% mortgages in Ireland

Thursday, July 14, 2005

First Active has become the first financial institution to offer 100% mortgages in the Republic of Ireland. The bank previously offered 100% financing to professionals in finance and medicine, but is now to offer this product to anyone who can afford to meet the repayments.

The development is a huge boost for first time home buyers who have been struggling to get on the Irish property market in recent years due to the rapid increase in house prices. A typical first time buyer in Dublin with 92% financing would normally have to put down a deposit of €20,000-€30,000 in cash, but now have the option to produce no deposit.

First Active has said that 100% mortgages will be available across its entire range of mortgage products.

Note however that this is not necessarily an entirely positive development.

The United States and most of Europe have experienced a housing price bubble in recent years. A bubble occurs when buyers purchase a property not because its price is appropriate for its actual value but because they expect the price to significantly rise in the short term permitting resale with a profit.

In other words, the prices people pay for properties becomes divorced from the real value of the property; the purchase is speculative and depends purely upon the expectation that people will continue to buy properties in this way (e.g. without proper consideration of their real value).

The terrible weakness in this is that when the market corrects itself and prices fall to a level where properties are being priced at their actual realistic value, anyone holding a property loses a great deal of money, since the price they paid does not reflect the actual realistic value of the property.

This kind of shock to the housing market is extremely undesirable. Significant write downs in the value of property often significantly depress the economy as a whole.

Less than 100% mortgages force buyers to invest a significant amount of money in the act of purchasing their house, which tends to discourage purely speculative purchasing, thus helping to mediate house price bubbles.

With 100% financing, anyone who can meet repayments can speculatively purchase a property. This naturally encourages pricing bubbles.
