On Sunday, Wikinews interviewed creator of memorial site LisaMcPherson.org, former Lisa McPherson Trust employee and long time Scientology critic Jeff Jacobsen.

LisaMcPherson.org is a memorial site created in 1997 containing information on her death and the resulting legal case against the Church of Scientology.

Lisa McPherson died in 1995 while in the care of the Church of Scientology. After a car accident, she became mentally unstable. Scientologists removed her from the hospital and placed her in the Introspection Rundown, she died 17 days later while still in care of the Church. She was used as an icon during Project Chanology, the protest of the Church of Scientology by Anonymous. Protesters were pictured with signs that said “Remember Lisa McPherson” and “Ask Scientology Why Lisa McPherson Died”, other protesters had posters with her picture on it.

Abreu smashes records, wins Home Run Derby

The Philadelphia Phillies star, now 31 and a two-time All-Star, has produced well for the Phillies over the last half a decade without the glamour of other top players. However, last night there was no denying that he was the star of the show.

And what a show it was. The first batter in the 2005 Home Run Derby, Abreu proceeded to shatter the previous record of 15 home runs in a round, belting 24, including a 517-foot moonshot that exited the stadium in right field, going through two bats in the process. This rampage came immediately after ESPN announcers Chris Berman and Joe Morgan described Comerica Park, the site of the Derby, as a difficult park to hit home runs in.

In the second round, Abreu edged past Boston’s David Ortiz (who himself hit an astounding 17 homeruns in the first round) and Milwaukee’s Carlos Lee to earn a spot in the finals alongside Detroit star Ivan Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who snuck into the second round with 7 dingers, swatted the most in the second round, but his home-field advantage deserted him in the finals as Abreu smashed 11 over the fences to win the Derby for his native Venezuela.

Abreu’s three-round total of 41 homers broke Miguel Tejada‘s record of 27, set last year in Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

New South Wales government announces ‘Bradfield’ as name for third city of Greater Sydney

Yesterday, the state government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia announced “Bradfield” as the name for the planned third city in Greater Sydney.

Bradfield is located at west of City of Parramatta and Sydney, in vicinity of the then currently in construction Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport. The city is to be named in honour of John Bradfield, the engineer who designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney rail line. The name came after a public consultation earlier last year.

In a press release on the New South Wales official website, Premier Gladys Berejiklian commented on the significance of the chosen name, “Bradfield was a renowned engineer who designed and oversaw the construction of both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney’s original railway network”. “The name Bradfield is synonymous with delivering game-changing infrastructure and it sets the right tone for the area we have referred to as the ‘Aerotropolis Core’ until now”, Berejiklian added.

According to the announcement, the planned city area is more than 1 km2 (100 hectares) positioned to the north of the Bringelly suburb. In the official announcement, Premier Gladys Berejiklian wrote the city would be a “high-tech manufacturing and research hub” and it would create 200 thousand jobs. Premier Gladys Berejiklian clarified the scope of the planned city, saying “[t]his area will be transformed into a thriving city centre, home to advanced manufacturing, research, science and education and we want Bradfield to be as iconic as the existing major city centres of Sydney and Parramatta. […] What are paddocks now will be a thriving, bustling city centre offering the best job opportunities anywhere in Australia.”

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres commented on the prior public consultation and the large community involvement, saying “The number of suggestions the community put forward to ‘Name the Place’ was overwhelming and we are thrilled with the level of participation and interest this project attracted. […] We thank everyone for having their say and want to assure the community the remaining suggestions will be considered as names for streets, parks and other landmarks in the new city centre. […] I look forward to Bradfield being the first name that people think of when starting a new job, creating a new business, learning a new skill and investing in NSW.”

Per a report from Sydney Metro published in June 2020, the Western Sydney International project of the airport and the metro is planned to be inaugurated in 2026.

With some comments on social media having indicated concerns over the hotter climate in the area, Wikinews has retrieved the mean maximum temperatures for the three areas — Sydney, Parramatta, and Badgerys Creek location — and has found arithmetic mean of annual of monthly mean maximum temperatures for these locations to be 23.13, 23.8 and 24.04° Celsius, according to the data from 1996 to 2020 from the Bureau of Meteorology.

According to official data from local authorities, City of Sydney was founded in 1842 and has an area of 26.15 km2; while Sydney was converted from a penal colony in the year of 1788. Parramatta was also founded in 1788, and has an area of 84 km2.

Nineteenth Maccabiah Games open in Jerusalem

Sunday, July 21, 2013The nineteenth edition of the Maccabiah Games, one of the largest sporting events in the world, was inaugurated Thursday in Jerusalem’s Teddy Kollek Stadium. Jewish athletes from all over the globe take part in this event every four years. US gold Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman lit the Maccabi cauldron.

The ceremony was attended by the President of Israel, Shimon Peres, along with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Jerusalem’s mayor, Nir Barkat. This year, over 40 sports are scheduled to be contested by more than 70 countries.

There are several advantages for the use of buprenorphine. The first is that is does not require going to a doctor or clinic on a daily basis. After a few weeks of being stabilized on this medication, a patient usually is able to see their doctor once per month at a convenient time. There are now more than 14,000 doctors in the United States who prescribe this medication so patients can easily find one in their area. Appointments are in a physician’s offices and are therefore more private. For many, not having the “stigma” of going to a methadone clinic is so important that they are now willing to seek treatment.

How does buprenorphine work?

Everyone has opioid receptors in their body. These receptors are responsible for how we feel pain and pleasure. We all know have well narcotics such as Oxycontin or hydrocodone work for pain. We also know how much of a problem heroin has caused because it is so pleasurable. The two main problems with opioids have been the risk of addiction and the risk of death in overdose. There has been an explosion in the United States with the overuse of narcotic medication by almost every age group; opioid dependence is no longer just for the heroin users.

The naloxone component in Suboxone helps prevent the misuse of this medication. If the pill is crushed and injected, it will not work. Buprenorphine itself has some special properties. It has the ability to stimulate opioid receptors enough to reduce pain, stop cravings, and produce a mild elevation in mood. At higher doses, it begins to stop working. An overdose of buprenorphine alone should not cause a person to stop breathing like other narcotics can do. Patients also report not getting “higher” on larger doses of buprenorpine. Rather, they report feeling “bad.” Because of this, there is less overuse.

A Suboxone prescription is not completely free of problems. Since it is a narcotic, long-term use of this medication will result in physical dependence. Suddenly stopping it will result in typical opioid withdrawal symptoms. It can be fatal if used in conjunction with other drugs such as alcohol and benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valuim, Ativan).

Finding a doctor that prescribes Suboxone (buprenorphine) is not difficult. There are a number of physician locator services on the web. You should note that not all physicians are registered on theses sites. Some do this so they can limit their Suboxone treatment to selected patients.
