Woman killed in house fire in South Yorkshire, England

Monday, January 25, 2010

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in South Yorkshire, England. The woman, who is currently remaining unidentified, was blind and 93-years-old when her bungalow in Sheffield caught fire as a result of an accident in her kitchen yesterday afternoon.

An internal investigation into the fire has suggested that while the woman was cooking, she dropped a towel onto one of the stovetops while attempting to move a pan on the cooker. The towel then set alight. When she attempted to put out the fire, the towel dropped to the side of the cooker, alongside some plastic bags.

A smoke alarm sounded; a nearby resident heard the alarm and went to assist. The neighbour managed to break into the bedroom window of the bungalow in order to be able to get inside the building. The person made it to the hallway but had to double back upon seeing the fire and the smoke. It is believed that the woman was overwhelmed by the fumes given out from the plastic which was burning.

At around 1350 GMT, fire service workers entered the elderly lady’s residence to find her collapsed inside the kitchen. People investigating the incident have come to the conclusion that this particular fire was an accidental one. A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service noted: “Neighbours who tried to enter the property were fought back by smoke and flames.”

US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Tropical Storm Danny to threaten the U.S. East Coast this weekend

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) has declared an area of disturbed weather north of Puerto Rico Tropical Storm Danny today, skipping the tropical depression stage.

A statement by the NHC said “a general northwestward motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected today and Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northwest expected on Friday.” This path should bring Danny near the North Carolina early this weekend, and possibly threatening the New England region by Sunday. While the storm is currently weak and disorganized, forecasters say the storm could reach Category 1 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. However, it is not expected to be as strong as the previous storm, Hurricane Bill.

At this point we are monitoring the storm

The center’s most recent forecast discussion on the tropical storm said “The forecast track is roughly parallel to the U.S. East Coast…and any deviation from the track could make a large difference in what areas get impacted by Danny”.

Some residents in the northeast U.S. are already monitoring Danny. Long Island, recovering from coastal flooding just last week as Hurricane Bill passed offshore, might suffer another hit.

Danny is currently situated about 445 mi (715 km) east of Nassau, Bahamas, and has winds of 45 mph (75 km/h). It is moving west-northwest at 16 kt. All interests along the East Coast are urged to keep an eye on the developing storm over coming days.

Australian government provides $15.8 million for North Adelaide Technical College

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Australian Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Gary Hardgrave has announced the government will provide AU$15.8 million to establish an Australian Technical College in North Adelaide. The minister said the government was entering into a partnership with the Archdiocese of Adelaide and consortium of industrial and manufacturing companies.

The North Adelaide college will be located in Elizabeth and be operated as an independent non-government school. The college is one of 25 to be established across the country.

Enrolments at the college will begin in 2007 and will offer courses in areas where identified skills shortages exist in the North Adelaide region, specifically – engineering, construction, electronics and cooking.

Mr Hardgrave said that the proposed college had been popular among the North Adelaide business community. “This important initiative has been well received by North Adelaide business and industry, and will help to address skills needs and provide opportunities for those in greatest need, including a lot of Indigenous students in the region,” Mr Hardgrave said.

“The fact that this College is being led by local employers, local government and other key stakeholders, means it will be truly industry and community driven,” he said.

Australian Technical Colleges were established to cater for year 11 and 12 students who wish to do an apprenticeship as part of their school education.

The Australian Education Union has expressed a number of concerns about the model put forward by the government. In a report, they claim that trade facilities at TAFE colleges (operated by state governments) will deteriorate as funding is diverted to the ATCs. The union is also concerned that ATCs are supposed to be selective VET schools. According to the union they will have selective entry and preferential funding. It is feared that teachers will be lured away from schools and TAFE colleges to higher paid positions in ATCs.

The Education Union suggested that the government invest in schools that already offer vocational education programs.

Factors That Determine Liposuction Costs

Factors That Determine Liposuction Costs

by

Aaron Rollison

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that helps to remove excess fat from specific body parts and contour the body. If you are taking into consideration the option of body contouring, then you would definitely want to know the cost that is associated with it. Actually, the cost of this procedure would depend on different factors such as the area treated and the amount of fat that has to be removed. Given below are the main factors that play an important role in deciding the cost of liposuction.
 • Area
The cost of the liposuction procedure would depend on the area that has to be treated. In addition, the complexity of the procedure also determines the cost. The most expensive picks are the abdomen and the breasts, while the more affordable areas are the outer thighs, waist, hips and the buttocks.
 • Amount of fat
Operating the abdomen of a 100-lb patient is simpler as compared to operating a 180-lb patient. This is because higher volume of fat removal is required in 180-lb patients. Extra time and effort are required on the part of surgical team and this contributes to the increase in the price.
 • Physical location
The cost of the opted procedure may differ as per the geographical location of the plastic surgery facility. Generally, if the area is a posh one, higher price has to be paid for liposuction.
 • Clinic or doctor
There may be a great variation in the cost of the liposuction procedure depending on the reputation of the clinic and the experience of the surgeon. There are many clinics that offer considerable discounts too, but you have to make sure of their quality. It is always better to opt for a surgeon that has a good reputation and is well known.
 • Anesthesia
In many procedures, local anesthesia is administered to the patients. However, some patients may prefer general anesthesia. The cost associated with general anesthesia is more as compared to that with local anesthesia. Thus, if you want to stay completely unconscious during the procedure, you must pay more and opt for general anesthesia.
Even though the cost of cosmetic and plastic surgery may be on the higher side, many financing options are offered to patients who wish to undergo surgery. The most important consideration of course is the plastic surgeon providing the service. Ensure that your surgeon is board certified, experienced, and provides services from a reputable plastic surgery center. Ideally, he/she should be assisted by caring, professional support staff. Liposuction is a surgical procedure which is effective for removing excess fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise, from specific parts of the body.During the past decade, liposuction surgery has seen a tremendous advancement in the techniques used, making it more effective in removing unwanted fat deposits in a very safe manner.

Christchurch can host 2011 Rugby World Cup final

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Christchurch, New Zealand‘s Jade stadium says they can host the 2011 Rugby World Cup final if Auckland can’t make a decision on whether or not they should build a new stadium on the waterfront or upgrade Auckland’s current stadium, Eden Park, costing NZ$500 million and $385 million respectively.

Jade Stadium would be able to host the final if they were to include temporary seating to accommodate 60,000 people, required by the International Rugby Board (IRB).

Gary Moore, mayor of Christchurch, said that if they were selected to host the final then they will ask the government for $80 million. The stadium is already planning for an upgrade, worth $60 million but that money will be funded from private and charitable organisations as well as the local and central governments. The current upgrade will see Jade stadium’s seating capacity grow to 43,000 and if they host a quarter-final or semi-final then temporary seating will increase the seats to 55,000.

Trevor Mallard, the Minister of Sport, said that the Auckland City Council and the Auckland Regional Council have both been given about two weeks to tell the government which decision it supports. If they cannot come to a decision then the final will most likely be given to Jade stadium, Christchurch. The least likeliest of all decisions, an upgrade of Carlaw park, but that is designated for a retirement home and on private land.

Mr Moore said that he and “stadium officials had offered Jade Stadium as a back-up final venue at a recent informal meeting with Mallard because of the continuing Auckland divisions over a site. This is about New Zealand Inc, not about Christchurch versus Auckland. What we have said to Trevor Mallard is we are able to put a stadium into Christchurch that would accommodate the numbers they would need as an insurance policy if Auckland cannot get its act together. The Government knows that when Christchurch or Canterbury puts its hand up it delivers with excellence.”

Bryan Pearson, chief executive of Vbase, the company which manages Jade Stadium, said: “It was not uncommon for major sporting venues to add temporary seating for big events. London had included temporary seating for some stadiums as part of its successful Olympic hosting bid. It was not a low-rent option, and was a commercially prudent way to marry short-term opportunity with long-term legacy.”

Mr Pearson hopes that Jade Stadium will not be used for the final as he understands why the government wants a national stadium, “Let’s hope this gets sorted and we can focus our attentions on playing a very major supporting role. We are only a third the size of Auckland, so what we can sustain post-World Cup is nowhere near what Auckland can.”

Warwick Taylor, former All Black, said it will be great if Christchurch can host the final even though he played in the 1987 final at Eden Park. Though Mr Taylor does say that an Auckland stadium is a better idea as a 60,000 seat stadium is more viable in such a large population city. Mr Taylor said that he “had great memories playing at Eden Park and in some ways would hate to see it lose the final. But I also like the idea of a national stadium.”

The New Zealand Rugby Union said that a waterfront stadium and an upgrade of Eden Park are the only two options being considered, and no other stadiums are being considered.

A lot of people are confirming that Christchurch will be able to cope with the huge amount of visitors that would arrive for the final as Christchurch has the highest per capita amount of restaurants and bars in Australasia. The city also features numerous hotels.

If New Zealand cannot deliver a final in a 60,000 seat World Class stadium then the IRB will allocated the final to another country.

Export Tax Rebate Policy Adjustment In China Prices Higher

By Lanbo Jiang

From July 1, the country introduced a new export tax rebate policy, the policy reduced the profit margin is part of the export enterprises in doing everything possible to resolve the losses, a more intense the strong survive, survival of the fittest in the market competition inevitable.

Policy of export profits of enterprises moving cheese

The export tax rebate policy adjustment related to 2831 products, accounting for all goods in the Customs Tariff of 37% of the total. Foshan City in Guangdong, an anonymous official told ceramics enterprises: “Ceramics of the export tax rebate rate to 5%, which means that enterprises export 40 million yuan a month there is no profit of 3.2 million yuan a! “policy changes in the business of export profits of the cheese. To encourage enterprises to export more, China export tax rebate policy for over 20 years, means that the state has been the departure of export goods declaration, pre export production and circulation in all sectors of the domestic value added tax already paid tax and other indirect taxes or consumption taxes , returned to the exporters. Many foreign trade enterprises in China’s main profits come from the Government’s annual tax refund. The main thrust of the export tax rebate policy adjustment is to reduce trade surplus, a considerable number of export enterprises for the means to directly reduce profits. It is reported that many export enterprises in time for the policy “weaned” prior to overtime goods, grab the relevant export, led to a sharp rise in trade surplus in May this year.

China’s huge trade surplus with the textile industry is a major creator of the textile industry in China’s trade surplus last year reached 129.2 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 71% of the total trade surplus. Therefore, the export tax rebate policy adjustment, the textile industry bear the brunt.Since the export tax rebate policy has announced that Wang Yong, deputy general manager of Guangdong Silk Corporation immediately force the cost of personnel, re calculation of the order. “July 1 to sign orders, in accordance with the original tax rate to calculate the costs, tax rates are lowered further, has signed orders on July 1 after exports will directly result in minimum loss of several hundred million yuan.” Yong force “The more severe is the single received this year will mainly depend on price increases to absorb losses due to changes in the profit tax, the customer will be lost if not to accept a certain market share, annual export situation is not optimistic.”

According to professional estimates, the export tax rebate rate declined one percentage point each, the textile industry’s operating profit would fall about 4%. The clothing, shoes, hats, etc. to adjust export tax rebate rate from 13% to 11% from 11% viscose adjusted to 5%. Last year the national textile industry, the average profit of only 3%. Not only is the textile industry, chemicals, paper, furniture, steel, cement and other industries are included in the scope of this adjustment will more or less, sooner or later feel the pain caused by this decrease in profit.Learned that many companies have in the brewing industry, price increases, some advance was started in May raised the price.

Adjustment for potential release of the signal moving companies

Policy variable transmission with national industrial policies and a strong signal. First, restrictions on high energy consumption, high pollution, resource commodity exports, 553 of such goods the export tax rebate policy has been canceled; first to minimize trade friction, enhance product value added, 2268 the export tax rebate rate for such goods further reduced.Guangdong University of Foreign Studies Professor of International Economic and Trade Xiao Harrier fly analysis pointed out that countries use export tax rebate policy to adjust the export structure and the promotion of industrial integration will become a trend. Shaw Harrier fly that low that their technical content, products strong alternative to low cost form of exports, driven by expansion means to enhance the performance of growth model has been difficult to sustain, enhance the technological content of products and enterprise grade, take the meaning type growth path of transformation is imminent.

At the same time, the export tax rebate cut will accelerate the industry reshuffle, through survival of the fittest, dominant enterprises will be more bigger and stronger. Advantage of the industry should take the opportunity to increase business value added export products, change the export model. As for steel, cement and other industries continued to decline in the export tax rebate rate, abolition of tariffs and even increase the macro policy guidelines, these industry leading enterprise restructuring should be accelerated to speed up the pace of product renewal, tap the domestic market potential, improve the industrial chain, to find the motivation and means of sustainable development.

Leather clear trend of export prices up

From July 1, China’s export tax rebate leather products to be canceled. At the same time, labor costs this year due to rising raw material prices, appreciation of the yuan and other factors, experts predict the trend of Chinese leather goods export prices rise significantly.According to latest Chinese customs statistics, in January 2007 to April, China’s major commodity exports of leather industry amounted to 7.12 billion U.S. dollars, up 5.8%, with the exception of leather clothing, fur clothing, foot basket volleyball, semi finished leather, finished leather down , the other main commodities increased in varying degrees over the previous year; while the export volume terms, in addition to raw hides, footwear components and the like, leather and shoemaking machinery growth, other major commodities were decreased.

Export value growth, exports decline, it is clear that in January to April, China’s leather export unit price has quietly increased. Specific to higher exports of leather gloves, for example, in January to April, China exported 230 million pairs, down 2.3%, export value of 230 million U.S. dollars, up 3.3%.According to the China Leather Association, introduced the Secretary General Su Chaoying, before the import and export of leather as the “processing trade”, the import of raw materials is not taxed, nor export tax rebates, there is no tariff burden on enterprises. But last year, this preferential policy on processing trade abolished, import and export of leather began to pay taxes according to the normal trade rates. For example, semi finished leather hides required to pay 5% 14% tariff and 17% of the value added tax, thus increasing the cost of leather exports.

“This year’s labor shortage downtown Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta flood of migrant workers flock to the area, a corresponding increase in labor costs, coupled with imports of raw hides and related products, raw material prices, the current company average price ladies pack up about 30%.” Guangzhou Rui Cippi a company Ms. troops.Information Office of China Leather Association Yexiang Ju said that because the state social security requirements are stringent, corporate labor prices is inevitable. “China is the largest producer of leather products, raw material demand for the domestic self’s not enough, especially in high end most of the variety to be imported. Leather imported from China in recent years has been rising raw material costs, coupled with appreciation of the renminbi, the transport costs continue to increase export tax rebate policy adjustment and other factors, leather goods exporters export price increases entirely to be expected. “

Cuba sentences USAID worker to fifteen-year prison term

Sunday, March 13, 2011

A 15-year prison sentence was handed down by a Cuban court to US Agency for International Development (USAID) worker Alan Gross for crimes against the state.

Gross was arrested in December 2009 while on a USAID mission intended to promote democracy by distributing satellite communications equipment to Jewish groups; these groups have denied any involvement in the matter. Such equipment, and distributing it, is illegal in Cuba.

According to a Cuban court, Gross’s activities were part of “a subversive project of the US government that aimed to destroy the Revolution through the use of communications systems out of the control of authorities.”

In response to the decision, a US National Security Council spokesperson said that the “sentencing adds another injustice to Alan Gross’s ordeal. He has already spent too many days in detention and should not spend one more.”

Gross’s wife has requested that Cuba release her husband on humanitarian grounds; some political analysts expect this to eventually occur. Gross, aged 61, is reported to have lost 90 pounds while imprisoned since his arrest, and is affected by ulcers, gout, and arthritis.

The Bar Stool: The Ultimate Home Kitchen Extra

Submitted by: Bill William

The home kitchen is a part of the home that enjoys an unusually high amount of attention within the field of home design and furnishing: it is the area of the home where food and liveliness abound, and therefore the kitchen understandably brings out the best in people and their home. Over recent years, kitchen design has gone through some radical, exciting changes, and today’s models of kitchen furniture and decorations are incredibly pleasing. There has been a marked trend towards adding a home bar to the kitchen or next to it, independent of the dining table, with bar stools included. The mood that this sort of arrangement can accomplish for your home is very enjoyable, classy, and is sure to be a winning combination in any home.

Bar stools themselves are a wonderful item of furniture. They utilize space economically, they are ideal for both sitting and standing situations, and when done right they are incredibly comfortable. The bar stool has traditionally been used for accommodating large amounts of people in restricted spaces, yet there has been a tendency toward including the bar stool into the home furniture line up, and the results have been wonderful all around. There are now more styles of bar stool available than ever before, and no matter what kind of kitchen or home bar area you have, there will be a kind of bar stool that will optimally suit your home aesthetics.

Modern styles have generally tended towards high-perched bar stools, well over the 30 mark, with relatively high lower footrest bars. These kinds of stools are preferable for a home kitchen with a bar that is also relatively high standing, with the effect being that the room itself takes on a slightly more drastic air. Of course, whether or not you will want to have high stools and a high bar will depend on what kind of house you have. With a kitchen and dining area with very high ceilings, then it will be a good idea aesthetically speaking to have a high bar with high stools; a low-ceiling kitchen area will of course be better suited towards a mid-level bar and stools, at around the 25-30 range.

Materials will ultimately define what kind of bar stools you want to get for your home (or, if you happen to be a business owner, your bar or restaurant perhaps), and today, thankfully, it is pretty easy to find bar stools made of high-quality, sturdy materials for relatively reasonable prices. Classic looking bar stools usually are made of deep, richly toned wood though it is increasingly common to see metal (or partly metal) stools, which increase sturdiness. As far as cushioning is concerned, it is pretty common to see polyurethane foam being used for the seat itself, though older bar stools will probably use some other material for the cushioning.

No matter what kind of bar stool you do end up buying, be sure to take a look at as many different options as possible beforehand, as you will be surprised at just how many different kinds of bar stools there actually are out there.
