Katharine Close, 13, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

Friday, June 2, 2006

Katharine “Kerry” Close, a 13-year-old 8th-grader from Asbury Park, New Jersey, spelled “ursprache“, a word for the ancestor of a language or language group, to win the 79th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. Close beat out 274 other contestants from 9 to 15 years old. This was Close’s last year of eligibility; she was one of only two contestants this year to be in her fifth year at the national competition. She finished seventh in 2005, having gotten a better ranking every year she’s competed.

This is the Bee’s first appearance on network television, with the finals airing on ABC; earlier rounds were televised in the afternoon on ESPN. Close, who enjoys running, music, reading, and her puppy, is the first New Jersey resident ever to win the competition, which she prepared for up to two hours each day.

Saryn Hooks, 14, was nearly eliminated in the eighth round, with “hechsher”, a symbol indicating that a food has been certified kosher. The judges mistakenly had the word down as “hechscher”; after being removed, she was reinstated in the next round after the judges received the correction. Hooks, who spent six months reading the entire dictionary to prepare, came back with confidence and finished in third place, missing “icteritious” in round twelve. This is the first time the judges have made such a visible error in the televised broadcast.

Kendra Yoshinaga, 12, of Thousand Oaks, California, a favorite for the finals, was knocked out in the seventh round just before the ABC broadcast began by “cointise”, a scarf worn on a lady’s headdress. Yoshinaga said that this third national bee she’s competed in felt “a lot more rigid” than the previous two.

This year’s schedule was rearranged for the ABC news broadcast: previous championships have been held earlier in the day. The spellers have all been given more media attention; for this reason Yoshinaga is perhaps one of the few who didn’t want to win, claiming that it would be too much. She has already received her share of attention, as co-author of The Spelling Bee And Me: A Real-Life Adventure In Learning, a children’s book about her experiences.

“People I don’t know very well seem to make a big deal about it, but my really close friends know that it’s not a really huge part of my life,” she says, of her relative fame. Keenly interested in politics and social issues, Yoshinaga spent a large portion of her last two trips sightseeing in Washington, but this trip, she says, has been more focused on studying.

“My mom sometimes finds words for me from books and magazines,” says the homeschooler, who studied over 30,000 words in the week preceding the national bee. Paige Kimble, bee coordinator, wouldn’t have been surprised to see her break into the top ten.

Another favorite eliminated earlier on in the competition was Samir Patel, who tied for second in last year’s 19-round marathon and placed third in 2003. Patel misspelled “eremacausis” in round 7, joining Yoshinaga and 6 others in a tie for 14th place.

The studious 12-year-old has one more chance at the national finals; Yoshinaga has two, as students may compete from their fourth through eighth grade years.

Cody Boisclair, a 23-year-old graduate student at the University of Georgia, misses the competition. He competed in the 1997 and 1998 finals, placing fourth in his second try. The Bee has changed since he began participating, becoming more international, and with increased media attention putting more pressure on spellers. Though many critics claim that the rote memorization and drilling of spelling bees is not a particularly beneficial activity, Boisclair believes his experience in the bee helped his knowledge of language rather than serving as a simple display of memory.

“I was one of those people who tried to dissect the word into its component parts, to find similarities to other words that I was familiar with,” says Boisclair, who began reading at the age of two. “Although I did do some drilling, I tried to find relationships to help me remember words, and even tried to analyze the words I was studying as I studied them.” His analysis skills led him not to a career in lexicography or linguistics but rather to graduate study in computer science.

Boisclair, who spent the evening watching the Bee on television while in a chat room with several other former national finalists, looks back on the competition as one of the highlights of his school years. “I think the best thing about it was a sense of camaraderie—for once, I really felt like I fit in somewhere. I was with people my age who were, by and large, ‘on the same wavelength’.” Also, Jasmine Kaneshiro, 14, from Honolulu, Hawaii, was not a favorite, having done quite badly last year, did better. She moved up from 72nd place in the 2005 bee to 45th place. It was her second year. “I’m pleased with my performance this year,” Kaneshiro said.

Tips On Buying Used Mini Diggers Online

By Robert Tate

Buying a used mini digger online could save you money and time as the Internet will give you instant access to a large of selection of diggers giving you a better chance of finding exactly what you need in the price range you want.

Brand new equipment depreciates in value over time and sometimes quite quickly, especially as newly evolved designs are appearing every year. Providing you don t need the latest model or accessory, looking online for a used digger will probably unearth what you need.

As with any second-hand purchase it is always a good idea to gather as much information in advance of making any big decisions. Doing your homework gives you a much better chance of getting the right excavator and avoiding trouble or heartache later on.

Some of the more recent designs of mini digger have hydraulic lifting and moving systems and are very powerful; so it may be that one of these might do your job just as effectively as a larger model and save you some money as well. Another consideration is access to your site or project, the last thing you would want would be to buy a larger digger and then discover that you cannot get it on your site or project area.

The scale of you jobs needs some thought. The depth of the foundation, hole or trench that you need is a consideration as is the working radius of your site; your excavator must have enough room to swivel about and transfer earth easily or the job will be made unnecessarily complicated and time consuming.

Your digger choice will also depend on the nature of the site you are working on in various ways: the type of earth that you need to shift will determine what type of bucket or scoop you need on your digger, with hard or rocky soil requiring a larger bucket while a smaller one is adequate for looser soils.

An important financial consideration is the transport costs involved in getting your digger from the seller to your site. You may have found what seems like an online bargain, but if it is several hundred miles away then you may find that the hassle and extra expense involved are not worth it.

As with any purchase of used equipment it is a good idea to find out as much as you can about the history of your digger. If it has been heavily used for a long period of time you may want to ask further questions about its condition and make sure that all levers, arms and control mechanisms are working properly. Check out service history and any repairs that have been made and don t be afraid to ask further questions if you are not completely happy. If the machine appears to have been given an honest appraisal that doesn t sound excessively glowing for its age and price then that can be a good indicator of the honesty of the seller.

If you a have forearmed yourself with as much information as you can about digger brands and what features and specifications you need, then you can trust your instincts as regards the information in front of you. You are entirely within your rights to ask for further clarifications on specifications or features if you want, and if you are still not happy, look elsewhere. Educating yourself and taking your time will help you get the best deal and the right digger.

US Food and Drug Administration reports melamine found in contaminated pet food

Friday, March 30, 2007

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced at a press conference today that a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics was found in recalled pet food from Menu Foods.

The FDA found melamine in samples of Menu Foods pet food and in samples of wheat gluten, imported from China, which was used as an ingredient. The FDA analysis, however, does not confirm the presence of the rodenticide aminopterin, which was reported March 23 by the New York State Food Laboratory.

According to Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, melamine is used primarily to make plastic kitchenware, although it has been used as a fertilizer in Asia.

Sundlof also indicated that the presence of melamine in the urine of cats that died from kidney failure was revealed through testing. He stressed that melamine was not determined to be the source of illness or deaths in the affected animals.

Sundlof suggested that melamine would not be found normally in pet food.

At a news conference Friday, Paul Henderson, President and CEO of Menu Foods, indicated that Menu Foods is satisfied that the contamination problem was related to melamine and not aminopterin. “One week ago, some of the dedicated researchers who had been investigating this matter reported the discovery of a single, toxic compound in our pet food,” said Henderson in his opening statement. “That, seemingly, cleared the way for us to address the problem, deal fairly with the pet-owners who had been injured, put our business back together, and move on,” he continued.

“In the intervening week, other top scientists have been unable to validate the findings. That is, they were unable to find the toxin – called aminopterin – in our pet food, or in any of the component ingredients. It was also brought to our attention that some veterinary experts held the view that aminopterin was inconsistent with what was being observed in dogs and cats,” Henderson said.

Menu Foods has determined that melamine in wheat gluten from a new US supplier was the likely source of contamination, and that they are confident that the issue has been resolved. “Melamine has been found in the wheat gluten from a new supplier in the United States, who sourced this wheat gluten in China,” said Henderson. “This is the same ingredient that Menu Foods made reference to in its recall press release of March 16. Melamine has not been found in the wheat gluten that we obtain from our other suppliers.”

Henderson refused to name the supplier of the wheat gluten, leaving that up to the FDA. “We have had correspondence with the FDA and we know that they are diligently following-up on the supply of the suspect wheat gluten. It is not our place to name the supplier as we do not want to interfere in any way with the important investigation they are conducting.”

Menu Foods is maintaining the warning on the previously recalled product. “The recalled product is unfit for consumption by pets. It contains melamine. The pet food that we have manufactured after March 6 is safe and healthy,” stated Henderson.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

New Jersey officials: Stimulus bill hurting Atlantic City casinos

Sunday, March 29, 2009

A New Jersey congressman says restrictions on federal stimulus money are hurting gaming destinations like Atlantic City, and he is seeking to repeal a provision banning the use of funds for casinos or other gaming establishments.

Is Ken Calemmo right to suggest that the gaming industry is as important as manufacturing, retail or finance?
Add or view comments

“The demonization of gaming destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City for business travel is wrong, wrong, wrong,” U.S. Rep Frank LoBiondo said Friday during a press conference in front of Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The $787 billion federal stimulus bill passed in February specifically prohibits casinos from applying for funds for infrastructure improvements and other similar projects. LoBiondo said Atlantic City is losing millions of dollars in business as a result of that provision.

Casinos’ revenues dropped 19.2 percent in February 2009 month compared to February 2008, according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. LoBiondo said $160 million worth of business and 120,000 visitors have chosen other cities for their tourism plans due to the stimulus bill, according to Atlantic City Convention Center figures.

The administration also recently determined other groups like nonprofit organizations and local governments may not spend their stimulus money at casino properties. State officials said the rules are damaging a major pillar of the New Jersey economy.

“Are those jobs somehow less important or less meaningful than those in the manufacturing, retail or financial industries?” said Ken Calemmo, chairman-elect of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber.

Anti-gambling officials said the stimulus law does not prohibit casinos from taking advantage of tax breaks, and Atlantic City officials should not complain about the stimulus bill because the city is too reliant on an unreliable revenue stream.

“There isn’t a state, including New Jersey or Nevada, that could gamble themselves rich, any more than an individual could gamble themselves rich,” said Tom Grey, field director for StopPredatoryGambling.org. “They should’ve diversified (the economy) instead of chasing their loss.”

But Joe Kelly, chamber president, said 35,000 people work at New Jersey casinos, and thousands more around the state work for outside vendors that depend on casinos for their business.

“It is not just an Atlantic County issue. It is not just a Cape May issue,” Kelly said. “There’s purchasing done by every county.”

LoBiondo is working to repeal the provision with U.S. Rep Shelly Berkley, co-chair of the Congressional Gaming Cascus, and has reached out to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has a history of representing the interests of the gaming industry.

Bus driver convicted of killing eleven after falling asleep in California crash

Friday, October 9, 2009

A bus driver thought to have caused a 2008 crash after falling asleep behind the wheel in California has been convicted of killing eleven on board. Quintin Watts was found guilty of eleven counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and 21 counts of causing great bodily injury.

Watts was driving a coach carrying 41 Hmong and Mien people from Sacramento to the Colusa Casino Resort. The vehicle left the country road it was traveling on and rolled over in Colusa County. Most of those on board were elderly.

Watts’ stepfather Daniel Cobb, who owned the bus company, was amongst those killed. A jury took three hours to return guilty verdicts against the 53-year-old driver, who now faces a maximum of 76 years in jail at his November 4 sentencing.

An Extraordinary Experience With Thai Massage

Submitted by: Emily Taylor

If you are looking for a unique style of massage therapy, then an Ancient massage, also known as Thai massage is definitely worth a try. Thai massage is known as an ancient massage technique which was brought to Thailand 2,500 years ago from India which was later on practiced and developed by monks as a part of their early medicine care. This type of massage technique uses uncommon massage strokes and techniques that are rather strange on first look but are really effective in doing their purpose. A Thai massage is an extraordinary method that is vigorous yet both energizing and at the same time relaxing.

This type of massage technique had its great influence from the Ancient Chinese people who were practicing alternative medicine and is based on the Ayurveda principles. Acupressure technique is then applied on Thai massage which deals primarily on meridian points also known as energy lines. This technique targets the 72,000 sen on pathways or energy lines that should be free flowing on the human body. When these pathways are clogged, the human body s immune system is believed to deteriorate and becomes prone to any type of sickness. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture which focuses on meridian points all over the human body, although acupressure only uses pressure on those points instead of thin needles.

One of the unique things about a Thai massage is that there is no nudity required in order to perform a good therapeutic massage session. If you are one of the many individuals who are uncomfortable undressing on a massage session, why not try this one? Some massage spas offer free loose clothing as part of their service to the patient. However, if you are not used to being too close with a stranger, this would not be a good massage type to be recommended to you. There will be intimate and close contact positions during the massage session. Most people who had experienced a Thai massage express that the whole experience is similar to having a Yoga session but without exerting any effort on your part.

Like any other massage method, the masseuse or massage therapists are all licensed and skilled in performing a Thai massage therapy. This is essential because of the stretching and vigorous work done by the massage therapist during the massage session. Although there are no serious injuries during a massage therapy, it should be done only by professional massage therapists.

This type of massage technique uses the combination of massage methods for a more effective and relaxing whole bodywork experience. Shiatsu, acupressure and Yoga are the basic techniques blended well together and used to create a good alternative healing and relaxing technique. The shiatsu technique aims for the clearing of blocked meridian points all over the body with the use of acupressure on these points while the yoga is more on relaxing the patient to quickly and effectively recover a healthy condition. The patients will feel relaxed and revitalized on their whole body after 60 minutes of Thai massage therapy.
