High percentage of US patients on placebos without knowing it

Friday, January 4, 2008

A new study amongst doctors in the United States on the use of placebos—pills with no medical effect—shows that almost half of the questioned practitioners prescribe placebos, most of them within the last year.

The majority of 466 faculty physicians at Chicago-area medical schools interviewed by a research group of the University of Chicago stated that placebos are useful to calm a patient down or to respond to demands for medication that the doctor disagrees with, i.e. “to get the patient to stop complaining”.

96 percent of the physicians surveyed believe that placebos can have therapeutic effects. Close to 40 percent stated that placebos could benefit patents physiologically as well as mentally.

Twelve percent of surveyed physicians think that placebos should be banned from clinical practice. Among the doctors who prescribed them, one in five said they outright lied to patients by claiming a placebo was medication. But more often the physicians came up with ways to explain like that “this may help you but I’m not sure how it works.”

The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest association of U.S. doctors and medical students, tells its members that “[p]hysicians may use placebos for diagnosis or treatment only if the patient is informed of and agrees to its use.” The research, published in Journal of General Internal Medicine this week, is the first major U.S. study of doctors on the use of placebos since 1979.

Safe Hair Loss Treatment: Herbal Hair Remedies

Safe Hair Loss Treatment: Herbal Hair Remedies

by

Ashish JainHair loss is a wide spread phenomenon that often makes you feel very bad about yourself. Nothing could enhance your looks as better as healthy hair. For most of the people hair loss happens to be a miserable experience and they take a long time to accustom themselves with this new condition. But I would suggest all folks who feel traumatized because of their partial or complete hair loss to better search for remedies instead of feeling bad about it for the whole of their life. There is a wide range of remedial options which claim to offer permanent cure to hair loss. Herbal remedies are the best treatment options available though. There are two advantages with herbal hair loss treatment, first it is cost effective and secondly it doesn’t give way to side effects that you may experience with other hair loss treatments. Herbal hair loss remedies are of two types, either it could be in form of herbs meant to be ingested or there could herbs to be massaged or applied on scalp. In this article I would restrict myself to relate only external use herbs for hair. There is a good number of external use herbs which are applied on the scalp but only a few of them have the proven record of bringing back hair on scalp.Following are some of the easily available herbs:1.Carthamus Tinctorius: It is popularly known as Safflower oil. This oil happens to be very useful in making hair follicles work again. It tends to increase blood circulation towards follicles making follicles enriched with essential elements to combat any disruption in its functioning. It could be applied twice on scalp in a day. A consistent and long term use would give positive results.2.Onion: This essential food ingredient happens to be a unanimous choice as herbal paste to be applied on scalp for improving hair regeneration. Onion proves effective because of its sulfur content. Before taking bath you can apply onion on your scalp. The practice could be continued for months to get the desired effect.3.Red Henna: It is very common herb in use to combat hair loss. This herb is better suggested to be used twice a week. If you constantly keep applying red henna on your scalp you would prevent hair fall and you might be able to activate follicles for hair regeneration.4.Aloe Vera: It is also common use herb for various purposes and its efficacy for treating hair loss is due to presence of nitric oxide and certain enzymes that help in hair nourishment and growth.5.Red Pepper: It also serves the same purpose. But it shouldn’t be excessively used on hairs. These are some of the herbs that have proved to be effective as hair loss remedy. You can use any of them to overcome hair loss but consistency and patience is a prerequisite with these herbal external use medications.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

An account of the Esperanza Fire from an animal rescuer

Saturday, December 2, 2006

As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.

Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.

Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.

The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents andin their cars.

Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.

Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.

The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.

When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.

The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.

Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act”and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fireto prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”

MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.

The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.

Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.

MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.

It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.

Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.

MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

Healthy And Unhealthy Weight, How Do You Know The Difference?

Healthy and Unhealthy Weight, How do you know the difference? by Art ZammitMore than 1 of 3 American adults are at an unhealthy weight, and their risk of developing certain diseases is greater because of the excess weight. There are five classes of weight: underweight, acceptable weight, overweight, obesity, and morbid obesity (the most over weight class). This classification system has been developed because there is strong scientific evidence that people is classes other than “acceptable weight’ are more likely to have health problems. The more over weight you are the greater the chances of developing diabetes or high blood pressure can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. The best way to check whether you are at a healthy or unhealthy weight is to determine your body mass index (BMI), using an on line BMI calculator. These guild lines are good but they are not foolproof. For example, muscle weights more than fat, so it is possible to be extremely fit and have a weight at the top weight chart for your height.BMI Interpretation:Underweight – BMI Under 18.5Normal – BMI 18.5 – 24Overweight – BMI 25 – 29Obese – BMI 30 and overPeople who carry their weight around their midsection (giving you an apple like shape) are at greater health risk than people who carry the same amount of weight mainly around their hips, buttocks and thighs. In contrast people who carry excess weight below the waist in the hips, buttocks, and thighs, (giving you a pear like shape), the risk of excess weight is lower. There are some theories as to why it is better to be like a pear rather that an apple, but it remains a mystery. Why is the population getting heavier?Over the past 20 years, people have increasingly used sugar free sweeteners and cut down on the percent of total calories that come from fat. In addition, various fat substitutes have become available. You would think this would mean the average weight of the population is going down. In fact, it continues to go up. Why is this? The simple explanation is we are eating more. Though more of the food eaten maybe sugar free or low fat, the total number of calories being consumed is going up. Though we are using lots of sugar free foods, we are eating more sugar, and though we are eating more low fat foods, we are eating more total fat. Experts speculate that sugar free foods have increased our appetite for sweets, real sugar, and rich sweets. We also tend to fool ourselves into thinking that sugar free or fat free have no calories. While that is nearly true for some sugar free soft drinks, it is not true for pudding, crackers, coffee cakes, and other foods that are sugar free or at free. People are also eating in restaurants more frequently, and restaurant meals typically contain many more calories and fat than home cooked meals. If you need to lose weight look for a program that emphasizes slow weight loss, no more than 2 pounds a week.http://www.dietproductadvisor.com, The best place on the internet to find the safe, effective, and quick weight loss products or if need to jump start your weight loss program.Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started.
