Prison officers’ strike ends in England and Wales

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Prison officers in England and Wales are on strike today as part of a continuing dispute over pay rates with employers, the Ministry of Justice.

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) announced the strike, the first in its history, at 0600 (BST) on the morning of the 29th of August, just an hour before it was due to start. As the morning progressed, officers at most public prisons across the two countries locked prisoners in their cells (a “lockdown”) and walked out, aiming to remain on strike until 0700 on the 30th.

The strike has been condemned by the Ministry of Justice, as a breach of the Industrial Relations Act, with Justice Secretary Jack Straw calling it “deeply regrettable and wholly unjustifiable”. Immediately following the announcement of the action, the Ministry commenced proceedings to gain a High Court injunction against the POA. Such an injunction was granted by Mr Justice Ramsey, who said that there was “overwhelming case” for it, after the court heard evidence that a Joint Industrial Relations Procedural Agreement, agreed to prevent industrial action, had been broken.

Despite the court proceedings, the strike continued largely unabated, and was expected to run its full course.

Inmates were at one point reported to have been seen on the roof of Liverpool Prison, however the situation was brought under control without any escapees.

In Wormwood Scrubs Prison, London, all 1,300 prisoners were being looked after by just eight governors, while atCardiff, as prisoners, locked in their cells, shouted “You’re breaking the law” to the officers standing in the car park. As a result of the lack of staff, prisoners could not be transported to court, were fed in their cells, could not be visited and could not take part in any rehabilitation or community service courses. In addition, 900 prisoners had to be accommodated elsewhere, unable to be admitted to public prisons.

This evening, this strike was called off by the POA, who issued an order to all of its members to return to work, with further pay discussions expected to come on Friday.

What Do Piling Contractors Do?

By John Schofield

Perhaps now that you want to build a bigger home or want to improve your present office building, you will surely need somebody to help you do so. For sure, you will need some construction engineers, masons, carpenters, steel workers, and concrete specialists. But probably you do not know that there are some significant people you really need before you require all these people apart from those mentioned, to work on your construction. These people are the piling contractors. So called because of the kind of job they do, piling contractors are the people who are experts in making a building’s foundations, beams, base foundations, and other structures that are required before the structure is set.

Piling jobs are not easy jobs. These are actually groundwork that needs important measurements and calculations by professionals who erect foundations for the whole structure. If piling works are not perfect, any building will likely to collapse once a strong earthquake occurs. That is why it can be very costly to set up quality foundations because you need the best piling contractors for this job. Your property and the lives of the people who will occupy your building are always at stake if you opt for contractors that are not professional.

Maybe as the owner of the building you do not know what piling means in the construction business so as an orientation about piling works better read on this. Piling is a technique that is used by piling contractors in setting up solid foundations for structures such as giant establishments, tall buildings building, tall structures and any building that would be huge in its built. The piling contractors will drive their back hoe and bulldozers into the ground to make large hole for the foundations. Piles of wood will be driven and embedded on some points of the hole to form enclosures for the concrete. This will be followed by the laying of steel and the pouring of concrete to form foundations. This process is called the ‘laying of the foundations’.

It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But it is not as simple as it seems because before the piling contractors do all those things there are so many factors that they must consider first. They have to calculate the size, capacity and scope of the project before doing anything. They also have to check on the condition of the soil even digging deeply into the soil to know the condition of the ground underneath. They also have to consider the space required for rigging before the piling process starts. Piling contractors always rely on deep foundation and if there is the need for improvement of the present piling, they transfer the load of the structure to the deeper, stronger layer of the ground so that the foundations can have a high bearing capacity and will be very sturdy to carry the load and support the whole structure.

Piling contractors always have the usual materials with them. These are composed of wood, steel, concrete, steel-precast, concreted piles, steel sheet piles, timber piles, columns, and so on. However, not only the piling contractors do all the work. Alongside them are the geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, area contractors, site fitters and foremen. Every one of them including the construction workers will be doing their individual job just to build a strong building. There would be lots of planning, designing, streamlining, digging, piling and everything that is within the construction field. Now that you know what piling contractors do, maybe it’s time to appreciate their contribution to where you are now. Just remember that they keep us safe while we are inside the structures they helped to create.

Israeli barrage of Gaza continues with strike on PM’s office

Sunday, July 2, 2006

Israel has continued its barrage of the Gaza Strip with an attack by a helicopter gunship on the office of the Palestinian prime minister. The attack, which left the building ablaze, injured three Palestinian security guards and was described by the prime minister, Ismail Haniya, as senseless. “This is the policy of the jungle and arrogance,” Haniya told Reuters. “They have targeted a symbol for the Palestinian people.”

Israel claims the attack on Gaza, codenamed Operation Summer Rains, is to pressure the Palestinian government into freeing Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the Israeli tank gunner Israel describes as having been kidnapped by Palestinian militants on Monday.

Other Israeli strikes on Saturday night hit a school in Gaza City and Hamas facilities in the town of Jabalia in the north of the strip where one 34-year-old Hamas operative was killed and another wounded.

Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs gives opening keynote to WWDC 2005

Monday, June 6, 2005

Apple Computer CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs gave his annual opening keynote to the World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) at Moscone Center in San Francisco, California on Monday. He announced a seamless integration of podcasting with iTunes, and, to the amazement of many, that future Apple Macintosh computers will feature Intel processors.

Jobs welcomed everyone to the event and announced that there were 3,800 attendees. There are 500 Apple engineers at what is their largest developers conference in the past decade. There are over 500,000 developers of Apple programs (apps). Jobs said that Apple has 109 retail stores, with one million visitors per week, creating over $500 million yearly in revenue. The Mac market share is up 82% from 9 months ago.

Jobs then moved on to talk about a very anticipated announcement- Podcasting. Steve called podcasting “Wayne’s World for radio”. He called it the “hottest thing going in radio”, and, “exciting”. There are over 8,000 podcasts. Steve Jobs announced that automatic podcasting subscription would be built in to iTunes and iPod seamlessly. He also announced that QuickTime 7 would be soon available for Windows.

Moving on, Jobs announced that there have been 2 million copies of Tiger sold in the 6 weeks that it has been available. He demoed the Wikipedia Dashboard widget. Steve announced that Mac OS X Leopard would be released in 2007, the same time as Microsoft’s Longhorn.

In a surprising move, Steve Jobs announced that Macintosh computers would begin to be shipped with Intel processors, the same as in Windows machines, ending the eleven year partnership with IBM and Motorola. This is said to be out of Apple’s increasing frustration at IBM’s inability to deliver faster and cooler processors, though it is interesting to note that Intel has recently added Digital Rights/Restrictions Management (DRM) to its latest processors. This ‘switch’, he said, would happen beginning next year. Jobs said that Mac OS X has had “a secret double life” and OS X had “been compiled [for Intel processors] for five years.” He talked about the easiness for developers to port their Mac apps to Intel (x86) processors. Current PowerPC programs can be run on Intel processors due to a new Apple technology. He said that Apple is “getting ready” for the transition from PowerPC to Intel.

Donald Trump plans £300m “golfing paradise” for rural Scotland

Saturday, April 1, 2006

American multi-billionaire Donald Trump has announced plans to build a massive golf complex on an 800-acre site just north of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Speaking last night from the Trump Tower in New York, Trump said that the development will be akin to a “homecoming” for him. The ginger-haired property tycoon’s mother is from the Western Isles of Scotland.

The £300m project at Menie in Aberdeenshire will include both a links course and an inland course, and a 400-bedroom hotel as well as a golfing academy and holiday homes. The facilities are being built with the intention of attracting the Open Championship to the site, officially dubbed Trump International Golf Links, Scotland.

Fields and sand-dunes make up the landscape of the coastal site. Trump said of the location, “As soon as I saw it there was no question about it. I looked at 211 fantastic sites all over Europe, but here it is – the dune size and the ocean front. There is no piece of land that I have ever seen that is comparable to this.” The billionaire claims that the complex, set to be his only development outside the United States, will be the “best course in the world.”

Local and national political figures, including Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell, have welcomed the announcement with open arms, as the project is expected to bring in an additional £157m to the region’s economy within the first ten years. Scottish tourism company VisitScotland is also optimistic, expecting an influx of international visitors to play on (or simply visit) the site. Plans to expand the A90 road running past the site in the near future will enable more road traffic to and around the area. An £60m expansion of Aberdeen Airport will also allow for vastly increased international air links, akin to those operated using Boeing 767 aircraft.

Work on the golf complex itself is set to begin in September this year, with the Trump Organisation hopeful for a Spring 2008 opening date.

Surveillance cameras in New South Wales schools cause alarm

Sunday, July 8, 2007

Installations of closed-circuit television (CCTV) security cameras into schools in the Australian state of New South Wales has alarmed teachers.

Over 50 schools in New South Wales already have surveillance cameras in playgrounds and outside dining areas. The concern from teachers arises from the pending installation of further cameras inside classrooms and also corridors.

Teachers have expressed concerns about privacy and misuse of the equipment. Senior vice-president of the New South Wales Teachers Federation, Bob Lipscombe, said that teachers are worried about the footage being used improperly, as well as the fact that both teachers and students would be filmed at work by the cameras.

The increase in security cameras being used in schools is an attempt to protect valuable schooling equipment from theft and damage, in particular computers in computer rooms. Lipscombe said that installations in computer rooms will potentially affect many teachers, as all subjects can be taught with the integration of technology.

CCTV surveillance is preferred by some schools over fitting alarm systems and physical bars on entrances to the room, as it is cheaper to install.

“[Teachers] are concerned about its improper use and that it may be taken out of context”

Lipscombe said that the Teachers Federation isn’t against CCTV systems provided they are operated properly and with appropriate consent. A solution proposed is to only have the surveillance system record during times when the room is unattended.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has said that the footage obtained is confidential and used to assist police in investigating criminal activity.

Why You Should Only Go To A Licensed Professional For Botox

Why You Should Only Go To A Licensed Professional For Botox

by

Hylagen

When it comes to getting Botox injections, the most important thing to remember is that you should only get it done by an experienced physician or licensed technician. Surprisingly, there are a number of unlicensed practitioners that claim they are licensed to handle the injections. This is where mistakes happen and Botox gets a bad rap. If the wrong person does your injection, you can end up with some serious side effects. Botox itself is not dangerous, but getting injections from someone who is not licensed is. To avoid that risk altogether, make sure you do research on the doctor or clinic before you go in.

Many people who are desperate to get rid of their wrinkles and lines will not take the time to research the doctor or technician administering the injections. They just want the injections as quickly and affordable as possible. This is just not safe. Make sure you take the time to find someone who is not only licensed but who has a good reputation as well. You can often find reviews and ratings of different medical spas online. Pay close attention to the reviews and make sure you read the positives and negatives of what different people have had to say. This is an important part of searching for a good physician or technician.

Once you have found a doctor qualified to do the injections, you can rest assured that the Botox will be administered correctly. When done right, it will work to relax your muscles. Once the muscles are no longer contracting, the skin is able to smooth out. Over time, wrinkles and fine lines can disappear. The key is to continue the injections to keep those muscles in a relaxed state. There is no down time after receiving the injections. In fact, you can do it on your lunch break from work. There is no recovery process. Many patients are pleased with the results they get after getting it done by a licensed doctor or technician. After your treatment, the doctor may want to see you in two weeks to check on the progress of the injections. Imagine not having to use eye creams and concealers to hide the fine lines. You will be able to go au natural and not worry about wrinkles.

If you do not see a qualified and licensed professional for your injections, you might experience side effects such as eye droopiness. This occurs when too much of the medicine is injected into an area. It s a costly mistake that you run the risk of experiencing if you go to a clinic or doctor not licensed to administer Botox.
