Stolen laptop found; had over 98,000 students’ personal data

Sunday, September 18, 2005

San Francisco police have recovered a laptop stolen on March 11 from the University of California, Berkeley. The laptop was left unattended in the Graduate Division and contained personal information on 98,369 graduate students and applicants going as far back as 1976. This information included names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers.

The Silicon Valley forensic lab which analyzed the laptop said it had been reformatted, making it very difficult to determine if the data had been accessed. “There’s nothing in the Police Department investigation that points to any type of identity theft or credit card theft” said university spokeswoman Janet Gilmore.

The laptop was stolen by an unknown woman, who sold it to Shuki Alburati, who sold the laptop to an unsuspecting South Carolina man. Shuki Alburati was arrested on June 8 for receiving stolen property; he has been charged with one misdemeanor count.

He claims he didn’t know the laptop, a new IBM X40 worth $2,429, was stolen. He purchased the laptop from the woman, who said it wasn’t stolen, for $300 or $340. A few days later, on April 19, he placed the laptop on eBay. The winning bidder was a man in South Carolina who bought the laptop for $1,195.50. Police have said this man is not a suspect. Police were alerted by IBM after the man called IBM for tech support.

Shuki Alburati has pleaded not guilty. He claimed “It’s unfair, I didn’t know it was stolen.” His trial is scheduled for Sept. 30 before Superior Court Judge Michael Gaffey in Oakland. The woman who stole the laptop has not yet been found.

UK PM’s speechwriter awaits sentence

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

An English lawyer has pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice. He faked a legal judgment and sent it to a father who was pleading in Taunton family court to be able to remain involved in his child’s upbringing. The lawyer, London barrister Bruce Hyman, now awaits his sentence. The judge indicated that he could receive a prison sentence. Bruce Hyman is well-known in media circles, having produced The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio. He also produced a series with Clive Anderson, at Above the Title Productions, called Unreliable Evidence.

The father, a former City financier, had attended a series of court hearings in order to make suitable arrangements to see his child following an acrimonious divorce. Shortly before one of these hearings he received an email, ostensibly from a self-help group to which he belonged, which had attached a Court of Appeal case that appeared favourable to an application he had made for the judge to stand down from the case. The father, who was representing himself, duly showed the case to the judge. At this point, Bruce Hyman, the lawyer representing the former wife, claimed to the judge that the case was a forgery, which indeed it turned out to be.

After confirming that the self-help group had not sent him the email, the father then embarked on some detective work his own. The fraudulent email was traced via its header to a dial-up internet connection and a phone number belonging to a shop in London. The shop was able to recover CCTV footage which showed a man sending the email from an Apple laptop. The man turned out to be Bruce Hyman.

Sentencing of Hyman is due in Bristol Crown Court on the 19th of September.

What Can Laser Surgery In West Point, Ne Do For You?

byadmin

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body. Without your eyes, many daily tasks in life would be significantly more difficult and troublesome. However, not everybody’s eyes work the way they should. Millions of people are born with conditions such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatisms. These conditions can alter your eyesight in a way that you need corrections to fix them. Some of these corrections include glasses and contacts. Wearing and caring for contacts and glasses every single day can get extremely annoying and tedious after decades. Thankfully, there is a more permanent solution to these conditions. Laser surgery can quite literally reshape your vision.

What Is Laser Surgery?

As the name might suggest, laser surgery in West Point, NE involves the use of medical lasers. The most common type of surgery involves reshaping the cornea. The laser will physically cut a flap into your cornea. Once the flap is there, the surgeon will then fold back the flap and then remove some corneal tissue from underneath the cornea. The flap is then replaced. The reshaped cornea can now reflect light into your eyes properly, which can lessen or completely fix vision problems. There are other forms of laser surgery that are designed to help with different, more specific eye problems. You can consult your regular eye doctor to determine which type of laser surgery is most suitable for you and your eyes.

Why Get Surgery?

While glasses and contacts can correct some visual problems, wearing them every day can become rather annoying. Not only do you have to wear them but you often have to take special care to ensure that they are rarely if ever, damaged. These types of corrective devices can be extremely expensive, depending on your vision problems. That being said, vision also changes over time, meaning that you have to go back to the eye doctor to change the strength of those corrective devices repeatedly. This is a costly, time-consuming, and tedious process. With laser surgery, you will be able to do that less or maybe not even at all anymore. US President Obama celebrates his first Martin Luther King Jr. Day while in office

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

On Sunday, at a Bapist church originally founded by freed slaves, US President Barack Obama addressed the congregation about the “Dream” of slain civil rights activist Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.—whom Obama credits with paving the way for his 2008 election—and about the importance of hope and faith in his own life.

On Monday, Obama, with his family in tow, served hot lunches at a local Washington soup kitchen—one of several ways America’s first black president planned to pay tribute to the late Dr. King on the federal holiday that honors his legacy and lasting impact upon society.

Later at the White House, Obama will host a gathering consisting of small selected group of African-American seniors and their grandchildren where they will discuss the meaning of the civil rights movement and how it still effects them to this day. Following which, that evening, the Obamas are slated to attend the “Let Freedom Ring” concert at the Kennedy Center. A musical event that will feature gospel artists and choir members from various area churches among other houses of worship.

Another prominent American politician, governor-elect of New Jersey, Chris Christie held a banquet on Monday evening to honor the importance of Dr. King’s message as well. Other commemorations included a march in Seattle where participants rallied for issues in the African-American community.

Popular Hawaii Plastic Surgeries: Facial Cheek Implants}

Popular Hawaii Plastic Surgeries: Facial Cheek Implants

by

Shirley Rizzo.

Whether you want to create symmetry in your face, or perhaps recover from the signs of aging, many people are considering undergoing the Hawaii plastic surgery procedure of facial implants. Growing in prevalence, cheek implants help restore the youthful quality to your cheeks, and they make flat cheekbones look fuller again. Or, those who have never been happy with the appearance of their cheekbones would appreciate what this type of Hawaii plastic surgeries could do for their facial appearance.

Cheek implants (submalar/malar augmentation), also sometimes referred to as cheek augmentation, is a form of Hawaii plastic surgeries that can bring contour and balance to the entire face of a patient. Indeed, cheeks play a tremendous role in creating the overall look and appearance of our face.

Cheekbones play a big role in defining the look of the face. For example, cheekbones that are flat can cause a nose that is big to look even bigger, and they can make a receding chin appear that much smaller. Cheekbones also serve to give balance to the face and to bring attention to the eyes.

By making modifications to the bones of the face, facial harmony can be achieved, thus giving the Hawaii plastic surgeries patient a more balanced and beautiful look. It is not uncommon for a patient to have two Hawaii plastic surgeries at the same time: cheek implants in conjunction with rhinoplasty (also known as a nose job).

Who is a good candidate for Hawaii plastic surgeries cheek implants?

A person who is considering having any type of Hawaii plastic surgeries, whether it is cheek implants or another form of surgery, must be in top notch physical and emotional health. The person must not have any pre-existing medical conditions to speak of, and they must not be suffering from any type of disease.

Who gets this form of Hawaii plastic surgeries?

The individuals who most often desire cheek implants via Hawaii plastic surgeries are those who have cheekbone structures that are underdeveloped. It is also common for those who have lost the padding of healthy fat and the soft tissue that make up strong cheekbones to want to restore their youthful look. The loss of the appearance of defined cheekbones most often happens naturally due to the aging process.

As time passes, the tissues and the fats in the cheekbones lessen. This causes the skin to sag, and then gives the appearance of flat and/or sunken in cheekbones. The lack of tissues making up the cheekbones can lead to wrinkles and folds developing around the mouth. Female patients of Hawaii plastic surgeries often want to have the sagging skin of their cheekbones repositioned in an upward direction. They also routinely want to create an outwardly direction, filling in the depressions and hollows of their cheekbones. This can create a more youthful and vibrant appearance for any patient.

The cheek implant through Hawaii plastic surgeries is often thought of as a type of scaffolding that serves to hold up tissues inside the cheekbones that have collapsed and sunken in, potentially by gravity and the hands of time.

It is essential during your consultation with the Hawaii plastic surgeon that you divulge your complete medical history and tell him whether or not you have ever had any other Hawaii plastic surgeries. The more information he has to add to your chart, the better prepared he will be to perform your surgery. If you have experienced dental problems in the past, this is also pertinent information for him to know.

Whether you want to rejuvenate your face structures youthful appearance, or perhaps give your natural cheeks greater definition, obtaining Hawaii plastic surgeries in the form of cheek and facial implants can give you the beautiful look you deserve.

Wikinews interviews Sandra Jephcott, Sustainable Australia candidate for 2020 Groom by-election

Friday, November 27, 2020

Voters in the Australian electoral district of Groom are scheduled to go to the polls in a by-election this week following the resignation of Liberal National MP John McVeigh for family reasons.

Groom is located in the state of Queensland, and is centred around the city of Toowoomba. At the last federal election, the Liberal National Party, Queensland’s dominant conservative party, won this seat by over 70% of the two-party-preferred vote, and since the seat’s creation in 1984, it has been held by conservative political parties.

Some political analysts considered this a foregone conclusion, with analyst Kevin Bonham having declared it on his blog as “Australia’s most boring by-election”, however Bonham noted the size of the swing may have been indicative of the dominant centre left Labor Party’s general performance in Queensland. There was a 4.2% swing against the Labor Party in the state of Queensland at the previous federal election.

Wikinews spoke to one of the four candidates running in the by-election, Sandra Jephcott, who is running for the Sustainable Australia party. Sustainable Australia describes itself as a “independent community movement from the political centre”. According to the party’s website, Jephcott is a veterinarian and farmer, who has completed a veterinary degree from the University of Queensland, as well as a Master of Business Affairs at Bond University and a Master of Science at James Cook University. With Wikinews, Jephcott discussed climate change, COVID-19, water security, and foreign ownership.

Bad Credit Unsecured Loans: Financial Loans Without Collaterals And In Spite Of Poor Credit

By Gilbert Imlay

At times, an individual may be faced with an urgent monetary requirement and not have the necessary security to place as collateral against a financial loan. In such circumstances, he needs to be cautious about the loan plan which he applies for as only unsecured loans can meet his need for loans without collaterals. If such an individual has a poor credit history, then his chances of getting a suitable loan are further diminished, as the poor credit history of a borrower without collaterals is considered as a high risk category by many lenders. However, such a situation does not mean that one cannot get easy financial loans but it simply means that you need to apply for the right category of loans that are meant to cater to special financial cases like yours. The bad credit unsecured loans are one such category of loans which you could find very beneficial considering your financial constraints and special credit rating.

A bad credit could happen to anyone and any financial lender offering the bad credit unsecured loans will understand this situation. Hence, any individual with poor credit ranking and no guarantee to be placed against a financial loan can opt for these unsecured loan options. Also, since a home is the most commonly placed security against a loan, a tenant could also make use of the bad credit unsecured loans, to meet any urgent financial requirements. A potential borrower must, however, realize that unsecured loans come at a higher rate of interest than the secured ones and a bad credit further increases the already high interest charged by lenders. The high interest rate is meant to minimize the risk of a lender against potential loss of the principal amount of loan; hence, the borrower should be prepared to shoulder the burden of such interest rates in lieu of instant cash access.

If you opt for the bad credit unsecured loans, you have the advantage of not placing any asset as collateral against the loan, which could be claimed by the lender in case of non repayment or delayed repayment of the loan. However, this does not imply that the lender cannot take any legal action against the borrower or penalize him due to payment defaults. Non repayment or delayed repayment of the loans will only further increase the bad credit rating of the borrower, adversely affecting the existing bad credit rating and making it even worse.

The online facility offered by most lenders, make it easy to apply for and get access to the bad credit unsecured loans. A potential borrower only needs to fill up the online application form available at the lender’s website, with his basic personal and financial status. The lender verifies the accuracy of the information thus provided and gives instant decision on the loan approval. Once the loan has been approved, the loan amount may be transferred to the borrower’s account within 24 hours of the loan approval, making it convenient for him to meet any urgent financial requirements. It is no wonder, therefore, that the unsecured loans for bad credit holders are fast climbing the ladder of popularity.

Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline

Sunday, March 15, 2009

200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm.

Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. One of the overboard containers ruptured the hull of the Pacific Adventurer, causing between 30 to 100 tonnes of oil to spew from the severely damaged ship.

If the ammonium nitrate mixes with the heavy oil, an explosion could occur. None of the containers have been recovered. Some of these may float, but it is believed that they may have sunk which then may cause algal blooms.

Disaster zones have been declared at Bribie and Moreton Islands, and along the Sunshine coast.

The vessel’s owner, Swire Shipping, reported that a second leak began on Friday, when the ship began listing after docking at Hamilton for repairs. “As full soundings of the vessel’s tanks were being taken at the port to determine how much oil had leaked from the vessel, a small quantity of fuel oil escaped from the Pacific Adventurer,” it stated. The ship was brought upright, and a recovery vessel was used to suck up the oil from the water. The leak produced a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River. Booms were placed around this oil spill so that a skimmer could clean up the second spill.

Swire Shipping could face clean up costs of AU$100,000 a day as well as fines up to AU$1.5million (US$977,000; £703,000) if found guilty of environmental breaches or negligence.

Sunshine Coast beaches are slowly starting to be reopened. The beach of Mooloolaba was still closed following reports of burning sensations from swimmers. 12 beaches remain closed; however, 13 have been reopened.

Over 300 state government and council workers are using buckets, rakes and spades in the clean up effort. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott says the majority will be gone by Sunday afternoon. The full environmental impact on wildlife is not yet known. One turtle and seven pelicans have been found covered in oil.

There are concerns that the drinking water of Moreton Island is at risk, as the island uses water from the underground water table near the oil spill site.

“Every bucketload of contaminated sand has to be removed from the island by barge, and each bucketload from a front-end loader weighs about one tonne. It’s just an impossible task,” said Mr Trevor Hassard of the Tangalooma Dolphin Education Centre.

The commercial fishing industry has suffered from the incident. Trawlers won’t resume operations until Sunday evening, and any catches will be tested for human consumption.
