The Importance Of Good Web Design

The Importance of Good Web Design

by

Heather Stugen

After HTML 5, CSS, social media and high speed broadband, the biggest change the internet has seen has been an sweeping change in how websites are designed.

From hyperlink text heavy to sleek navigation menus, to a more fluid navigation interface that is intuitive and doesn\’t take away from the website\’s content, the web has come a long way. When even casual blogging platforms pay attention to principles of typography and design ratios, it is clear that good web design has become a critical part of the online experience.

Let\’s explore in detail the importance of web design aesthetics.

It Sells

Not in the figurative sense of the word sell (i.e. appeal) but rather helps the revenue. People from all walks of life, from accountants to rock musicians are creating websites to promote their own services and identity. With billions of web sites, a netizen is spoilt for choice. many tabs and applications constantly running means our attention span is in seconds, and recall for a website is even harder. Who will want to a remember a comic san font, garish neon backgrounds and visual clutter (pretty much the reason why MySpace.com failed when it allowed users to design their own pages), when a sleek impactful website is on your browser?

It\’s Easy

With thousands of templates for every kind of website (and more being rolled out by designers everyday) It\’s frankly not difficult at all to download a template and load it onto your website in minutes, play around with it – or find another one within seconds. In fact, many websites specialize in hunting out new beautiful templates for a variety of design needs.

Even Tumblr, a well known microblogging and social platform has a stylish web page by default. Choosing to have an ugly webpage signifies lack of interest for your reader\’s viewing pleasure. As a certain standard aesthetic becomes common across the web, it is in fact easier to conform, add a few personal touches with the host of great customisable templates.

It Creates Results

Successful web design case studies including Facebook (whose constant redesign are said to be a critical reason for its constant popularity) and Google (minimal, yet beautiful) show that combination of colors and typography, animations can radically change how we perceive an online entity. News websites are overwhelmingly white and black to represent crisp authoritativeness, while soft pastels are used in a variety of hues to communicate everything from softness to elegance – this is the impact of color on a brand\’s identity.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Cleveland mayor Arthur Kostendt

Monday, June 14, 2021

Arthur Oliver Kostendt, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Cleveland, Ohio set to take place November 2, discussed his campaign and policies with Wikinews this spring.

According to Cleveland Scene, 29-year-old Kostendt is a member of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Republican Party but has referred to his campaign as “casual”. According to his web site’s personal biography, he was a cadet for the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), scout platoon leader for the 2nd Squadron of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard and logistics officer for the 1st Battalion of the 145th Armored Regiment. He served in Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and assisted coalition force detachments in Southeast Asia.

Kostendt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and summa cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University. He writes he uses an apostrophe to abbreviate his middle name as “Arthur O’Kostendt” instead of the customary period after the O to emphasise his Irish heritage.

A poll published May 5 by Baldwin Wallace University, which does not feature Mr Kostendt, has Dennis Kucinich and Basheer Jones leading in the mayoral race by 17.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, with a margin of error of up to five per cent either way. 48% of those surveyed were undecided. Incumbent mayor Frank G. Jackson, who won the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election with 59% of the vote, is eligible for a fifth term but announced on May 6 he would retire.

Canadian government announces major tax reductions

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced a five-year program that could reduce taxes by a total C$60 billion.

The planned tax reduction measures include:

 • Low-end personal income tax rates would be reduced from 15.5% to 15%, taking retroactive effect to the start of 2007;
 • The basic personal exemption, the amount at which income is taxable, is raised from C$8,929 to C$9,600, also backdated to January 2007;
 • Business tax rates are expected regularly drop from the current 20.5% to 15% in 2012;
 • The Goods and Services Tax that applies to most purchases would be reduced from 6% to 5% as 2008 begins. This rate was previously reduced from 7% July 2006, shortly after Prime Minister Stephen Harper took office.

These measures will be brought before the House of Commons in Ottawa on Wednesday as a confidence motion. In Canada’s minority government situation, opposition parties could defeat these measures and likely prompt an election. However, opposition leader Stéphane Dion has expressed an unwillingness to defeat the government on this matter.

International participants showcase different industry cultures at 2008 Taipei Game Show

Friday, January 25, 2008

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.

Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

In the 2-days Digital Content Forum, world-class experts not only shared industry experiences, members from Taiwan Gaming Industry Association also discussed and forecasted marketing models for gaming industry. With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

Australian Senator arrives at Parliament dressed as a beer bottle

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Family First Senator Steve Fielding arrived at Parliament today, dressed as a beer bottle to raise awareness of a bill he intends to move in the Senate today. Senator Fielding will introduce a bill to establish a nationwide refund scheme for bottles and cans.

A similar scheme has operated in South Australia since 1977.

Family First wants a rebate of 10 cents per container, while the Australian Greens want 20 cents.

Speaking to reporters outside parliament dressed as a beer bottle, the Senator said the legislation would reduce litter by 25 per cent. “There’s a message in this bottle.”

“I am no longer trash, I’m cash.”

“We should get the litter off the streets and off the creeks and into recycling – that’s good for the environment and good for the community”

“It’s a win-win and I can’t understand why nationally we don’t have a scheme,” said Senator Fielding.

Senator Fielding said that recycling not only reduced litter, but also consumes less energy than making new containers from scratch. “Recycling a plastic bottle saves more than 80 per cent of the energy used to make a bottle from scratch and recycling aluminium cans uses just five per cent of the energy used making a can from scratch,” said the Senator.

Senator Bob Brown, leader of the Greens said while there were environmental benefits from recycling, it would also create thousands of new jobs.

“This is a very good way of recycling and reducing energy because a lot of energy goes into making cans and bottles,” Senator Brown told reporters.

“It will employ tens of thousands of people across Australia.”

The Legend Behind The Navajo Rug

Submitted by: Gregory Crossett

The Navajos, deeply spiritual Native Americans, who drifted into the southwest Four Corners region as hunting and gathering bands from the Northwest beginning some 10 or more centuries ago, believe that Spider Woman, one of their most important deities, taught their women to weave. They also believed that Spider Man, her husband, constructed her loom from two horizontal beams lashed to two vertical beams, creating the traditional rectangular-shaped frame.

According to Navajo (Dine’) legend, it was the deity known as Spider Woman who taught a young Dine’ shepherdess who was shivering from the cold the art of weaving upon a loom. After teaching her to sheer sheep, card, and spin wool Spider Woman told her: “My husband, Spider Man, constructed the weaving loom making the cross poles of sky and earth cords to support the structure; the warp sticks of sun rays, lengthwise to cross the wool; the heralds of rock crystal and sheet lightning to maintain original condition of fibers. For the batten, he chose a sun halo to seal joints, and for the comb he chose a white shell to clean strands in a combing manner.” Spider Woman then warns the newly named Weaving Woman to “walk the Middle Way,” keeping her life in balance and not to do too much of one thing. Since Weaving Woman, the Dine’ have always been accomplished weavers through the generations, hoping to pay proper homage to the Spider Woman and her husband.

“In acknowledgement of their debt to Spider Woman,” said Raymond Friday Locke in his The Book of the Navajo, ” Navajo weavers always left a hole in the center of each blanket, like that of a spider’s web, until the traders in the early part of this century refused to buy such blankets. Most Navajo weavers still acknowledge the debt by leaving a ‘spirit outlet’ in the design.” This prevents “blanket sickness.” As Locke said, “Since the weaver carries the pattern of the blanket in her head from beginning to ending, perhaps blanket sickness is more real than imagined.”

Originally, the Navajo women probably produced their weavings from cotton or perhaps even from the wild mountain goats’ fine underhair. They switched to the Churro sheep’s wool after that four-horned, variously hued animal arrived with Spanish colonists at the very end of the 16th century. They valued the churro’s wool, said Navajo Glenna Manymules Bitsoi in the Internet site Sheep is Life, because it “is low in lanolin it does not require valuable water for washing nor time-consuming carding. It can be shorn, hand cleaned, then spun into tightly twisted yarn that readily absorbs indigo and native vegetal dyes, from which the Navajo artists create weavings famous for their exceptional luster, fine texture, and durability.”

In communities across the reservation and even among families outside the reservation, Navajo weavers have created a broad diversity of weaving, patterns and colors in their rugs.

Across the centuries, these Native Americans have left us with an unparalleled legacy in the fabric arts.

Michael Jackson doctor charged with involuntary manslaughter

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Dr. Conrad Murray has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection to the death of Michael Jackson, who Murray was doctor to. Dr. Murray was with the singer when he died on June 25 last year.

The doctor is alleged to have acted “unlawfully and without malice“. The prosecution’s complaint said that when Dr. Murray gave Michael Jackson a powerful sedative to attempt to assist Jackson with his sleeping, he acted “without the caution and circumspection required”. During rehearsals for a series of return concerts planned in London, England last year, the entertainer had employed the doctor to be his personal physician for the spring. If convicted of the charges, Dr. Murray could be imprisoned for up to four years.

According to Ed Chernoff, Dr. Murray’s lawyer, he will not plead guilty. Speaking on Monday, before the charge was filed, Chernoff stated: “We’ll make bail, we’ll plead not guilty and we’ll fight like hell.” The coroner’s office in Los Angeles, California, US reported that the death of Michael Jackson was a homicide, with the cause being an overdose of sedatives.
